sm465 to nv4500 shifter question
« on: September 13, 2018, 08:01:52 AM »
Does anyone know if the nv4500 shifter fits in the same hole as the sm465 shifter. I don't want to cut another hole in the floor.

no, another hole is required.  This is the main reason I have not done the swap.  My interior color is not reproduced and I am not willing to change the color of the matching rubber floor covering on my Scottsdale

Thanks so i guess i'm going to go the gearvendor route then. I've been doing aircooled vw for over 25 years and i'm tired of my newer chevy truck so I want to go old school and i can work on it and believe it or not old chevy trucks are cheaper that most vw's. i'm not leaving my vw roots i have to many tools and time and parts invested. I just want to try something new so i bought a 78 burb that's a manual for my next tow pig. i've been studying on what i want to do with it and OD was going to be one of them to get rpm's down for interstate driving and such. the way i see it a rebuilt nv4500 will cost the same or more than a gear vendor and you can tow in OD and don't have to worry about a nut backing out. I have read that sm465 is a great little tranny just needs more gears so i think that is the best options specially if you have to cut a hole i just can't do that. i like it to look OG inside. I'm a big fan in resto-custom look as we call it. Where you can change the stance and motor but you don't change the inside it looks stock and must use stock colors on the outside as well.

I've come to the same conclusion with the gear vendors route.  Not really to concerned because I have 3.21 gearing out back but would still like lower RPM's at 70-75 with no load.  My truck hasn't been on the road for 5 years due to life happening...

Well the burb I bought has the trailering package so it has 40 gallon tank and 3.73 rear end.

Btw here is a few pics of what I do in the vw world

This Is my current project but I don’t have any recent pics 70 panel these are kinda rare because of the chicken tax. I am building a small mini stroker for it now. 74mm forged crank and 88mm forged pistons with a very mild street cam. FYI a stock crank is 69mm and stock pistons are 85.5mm also using shorter rods so it will be the same length as stock without shims.

On a 2wd, gear vendors is the way to go, on a 4wd, I'd prefer to have the option of overdrive with 4wd-not an option with gear venders-electronic lock-out.

That said, if the interior is in nice shape, I would go gear vendors. I just did the NV4500 swap, but I have 4wd, and I rebuilt the nv4500 myself, so I only had $5-600 total into it.

Very cool VDub projects, got a '75 beetle I've been working on, going 74mmx87mm, only because when I purchased all the parts (3 years now....wow) 88mm forged wasn't available.

Does anyone on here done a gear vendor with an Sm465 with 3.73? I’m asking because my suburban has the trailering package and came with 3.73 and I wondered how that worked out on the highway?
