Title: Cab Question
Post by: chevyride on September 25, 2006, 11:57:00 PM
I have a 1979 k10 4X4. I am looking for a solid cab. I was told that I could use any cab from 1973 - 1987. Could someone please verify this? I found a cab off of a 2wd 1984. Other than cutting out the hump for the transfer case lever are there any other problems? Will this cab work? Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Any cab will do, but you need the complete hump not just the removable section.  Otherwise, the cabs are the virtually same.

If you plan on useing your 79 nose you will need to swap the 79 winshield wiper transmision into the 84 cab. One out of the three bolt holes line up on each side, you will need to redrill the other two.

Thanks for the information. What is the difference between the 1979 body style and say a 1981-1984 body style? If I wanted to make my 79 look like a newer model with the stacked (two on each side) headlights what would I have to change?
Thanks,

everything from the cowl panel to the core support is different on the 73-80 vs 81-91 split.

Do a search on the forum.  This has been answered very recently.

I am in the process of swapping cabs as well.I just junked a 80 cab and i am upgrading it to a 85 cab.The 81-87s have a slit in the top portion of the cowl because of the hood hinge changes on the 73-80 style there was no slit and the adjustment bolt for the hoodto raise it when it is shut.I am removing the welds around this part of the cab and removing these sections as i am going to bring back the 73-80 style and cut 2 sections from a older cab and weld these parts in.Other then the wiring and mentioned the wiper motor  i believe there the same too.

thanks

I believe that the bolts that go where the "slits" are there so the hood doesn't come thru the windshield in an accident.

Yes I belive you are right pugsy. If you look at an original 73 or 74 hood they don't have the crease across the middle to make it fold in half in a wreck, or when your hinges get stiff and you pull down and not in on the hood.
