Will a Speedmoeter gauge from a 79-87 C10 fit in a 73-78
« on: April 18, 2017, 09:22:46 AM »
Like the subject states I'm trying to figure out if the speedometer gauges are interchangeable.   shows two separate speedos, one for 73-78 and one for 79-87. Im currently having an issue with my odometer, the speed works but the odometer is stuck at xxxx.9 and clicks when trying to turn over to the next mile. It did this after i installed a new speedo cable and packed it with graphite powder (only thing they had at all the auto part stores). I actually pulled the speedo cable off from the transmission and used a drill to reverse the odometer, it ended up clicking the same way once i got to 0 and would not go to 9, i said oh well and put it back on the trans and drove it, somehow or another the odometer started to work again for about 20 miles and started to get stuck again. so im at square one again.

think the main issue is the font color and size. otherwise they should be the same but i cant say for sure, never tried it

I have one from a 73 that goes to 100 mph and from a later year (not sure which year), that goes to 85 mph.  They both install in the gauge housing and register although I never actually ran the one from the 73 in my 74 on the road.  The issue may be just the top speed, and you probably don't want to go 100 anyway.....

Thanks for the replies, i ended up finding a very nice GM restorations part from rock auto.  Looks just like OEM and cost abut $50 less than other sites.

If you check in our "classified" section, we try and keep a rockauto discount code in there
