FYI - the key switch in the column is just that, a key and tumblers that operate a small geared rack.  The electrical connections are not on the end of the switch.

The start/run electrical connections are mounted at the bottom of the column and operated by a rod that connects up to the geared rack on the end of the switch.  If the geared rack is cracked or broken, the rod does not move correctly and operate the electrical switch.

The switch is fairly easy to replace, but replacing a broken rack takes a lot more disassembly of the column.
