More Power From 305
« on: October 15, 2006, 07:30:00 PM »
Hi Guys I am new here.

Anyways I have a 73 Chevy C10 with a 305 and a TH350 tranny and a 12 bolt rear, The engine Mods are as follows:

Dynomax Headers
True Duals with Glasspacks
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
Holley 750 Carb
1" Carb Spacer
K&N air filter
MSD dist.
MSD wires
------------------------------

I am looking for Decent Pwer gains for Decent money,

I like the 305, it is a nice engine, I have thought about a 454 and a decent Tranny but this is my daily driver, and I have no other way to get to work.

Any help will be appriciated

well I would say that carb is probably a bit much for your needs. Have you considered a cam swap and maybe some cylinder head work?

1. Remove the spacer, it is okay, but they leak sometimes.
2. Do a cam swap, summit sells a 422/444 lift cam that would work well.  It is $70.00 for the cam and lifters.
3. Make sure that your headers are 1 5/8" tubing.  Too big is not good on a 305.
4. A good distributor or a rebuild of the stock one with a 50,000 volt coil.(Accel Supercoil is a good choice, their Brute Thunder is a little more voltage, but it fits under the cap like a stock one)
5. A nice flexfan would help too.

Thanks guys, I dont know for sure what the carb is, I believe it is a 750 but not 100% sure, I will check later.

Now with the Cam and Lifters, How hard is it to install?

I have a Cam in their now, that came with the truck, but it is a High End Cam. Power is horrible down low.

I like to do all the work myself and Im 18, I know alot about Trucks, especially GM. I built my first ATV when I was 12.

So you want more power down low?
You can swap the cam as mention prior for an RV type cam, which takes advantage of your hp at lower rpms.
You can swap your rear end with a lower (higher number) gear and get a pleasant jump from down low.

Thanks Sarge, Now if I swapped out the rear now, Will I have to change again if I put in a 400 SB down the road, So I dont burn out everywhere?

BTW where can I get that Cam?, I tried Jegs and Summit with no luck.

Comp cams tech line

CAM HELP®
1-800-999-0853

Higher gears would never have to come out because you would love the nice jump off the line they give. They will burn a lot more gas the higher you go.

I wouldn't go over 3.42's if you plan to drive it on the street.

with 3.73, you would be taching too high on the interstate unless you have larger wheels to compensate for the real low rear end.  Many may disagree and love that low end power for pulling, but for a street driver, as Chris stated, a 3.42 may be best and still get a good bit of low-end power.

Its just my low end now is horrable.

A little girl on a Bicycle can take me out off the line.

I heard that a 3:73 would be good, But I shouldnt be reving to High since I Manual Shift anyway, I have a Custom Built 350 Tranny that allows me to shift while still having an Auto.

When I bought my Truck, Almost everthing was in Stage one of Building to race, I have a Modified Tranny and Shift kit, A huge 12 bolt rear.

Only thing is the engine, The guy I bought it from had a 383 stroker engine he was planning on putting in it, But decided to sell and put it in a Nova.

I was looking on eBAY for an engine, and I came across a couple of Rebuilt 400 SBC's for under 2 G's.

I may do that one day, Its just what to do now?.

I Deffinitly need to open my rear to put Posi in, So while I am in there, I will Get Ring and Pinion as well, Its just deciding what gears to get for what I want.

I basically want this truck to Go fast, and Quick off the line.

I am a Major Import Hater, so any chance I get to beat them I take, and so far the only thing I can hold up against is the Basic Civics.

I dont race all the time, But when I get on it to speed up, Power is bad.

I just want to fill the gap, Yah know?

What size tires do you have?

I have 3.73's in one of my trucks and it'll do 70 @ about 3K RPM but I hardly drive on the highway so they are perfect for my truck.

Okay, I run 4.10's in my 78.  You will darn near come off of the ground if you run those, but you will be out of gears by 50MPH.  Run 3.42's.  They are a good all-around gear.  They will launch hard if you want them too, and they will cruise down the road just fine as well.

But still, unless you have an overdrive /or really large wheels like 18", going 60mph on the interstate will cause you to tach quite high....many rpms = lots of gas.

It wont be as bad as 4.10, but you get the idea.  YOu have some options.

It Doesn't matter what wheels he has it's the tire circumference. An 18"wheel turns the same speed as a 13" wheel with the same tire circumference.

Use a calculator like this one to get an idea. If you have a 3 speed automatic your drive range ratio is 1:1
