Mating a ‘98 Vortec to an SM465
« on: January 20, 2021, 10:16:17 PM »
Just sourced a 5.7L Vortec out of a 1998 2500 for $600. 140k miles claimed. Came with a free 4L60E, fresh torque converter/flex plate, new Holley 600CFM and some other goodies like a sweet JEGS 157410 billet gas pedal. What a deal! Old 5.0 that I blew some time ago is out and a 10243880 is going in. Wanted some clarification on the ability to mate this motor up to a 4 speed SM465. Does it need balanced? And will a standard ‘98 Vortec flywheel and clutch suffice?

Running a ‘79 C10 long bed if you’re wonderin’. Been sitting just a tad over five years n I’m finally dropping in a fresh-ish motor and I don’t wanna order or put together something that won’t link, but the forum posts I’ve found around the web seem to come to the conclusion that you can mate these two before devolving into an internet **** measuring contest. Anyone here who can clarify? Thx in advance.

And here’s about what she’s lookin’ like now. The mad scientist next door (pictured) helped me bend the bumper up just this morning:

Cheers.

Forgot to mention. As you can see here: https://imgur.com/a/WAHiOZx the motor’s already got a Vortec intake manifold that’s got the mounting points for the accompanying Holley carb, so I won’t be having to mess with an ECU or any of that stuff. It’ll basically run like an old school small block with Vortec heads I reckon.

What are your guy’s thoughts?

Seems from doing some more research:

https://www.pirate4x4.com/threads/vortec-sm465-transmission.1336466/

that the 5.7L Vortec and the 465 will mate up just fine just as long as the flywheel and clutch combo are both from between an ‘86 and ‘99 5.7L. Gonna go with a set up designed for the ‘98 2500 specifically just to make sure things go smoothly. I’ll be around and I’ll update again soon once the motor’s dropped in and turning over. Thanks again.
