4" exhaust system
« on: February 12, 2014, 09:46:03 AM »
Yesterday I went to Stan's Headers in Auburn. WA (south of Seattle) an had a 4" exhaust installed on our 1985 6.5 turbo diesel.  they built a full custom system that included making the down pipe with extra clearance for r/r the front glow plug. the down pipe is 3" (max clearance) but the rest of the system is a full 4". it includes a Donaldson high flow diesel muffler. the changes in the way our truck drives is amazing.  the turbo spools quicker, and the truck feels more powerful. I am also expecting better fuel economy.

stan's exhaust is a well known company that also has a web site and sells exhaust kits nationally.  The shop has been in business over 50 years and is able to bend tube up to 5" using digitally controlled mandrel benders.

the owner Stan (in his 70's) mentioned that they used to build headers for the non turbo 6.2 with good results.

4" all the way back huh? Nice. Just like my Duramax! But I got mine from John Kennedy (www.kennedydiesel.com) up in Wisconsin. Is it aluminized or the expensive stuff? (ss)

the 4" exhaust is aluminized, the good news is that it is all American made, not imported.  I needed a custom exhaust system because my 85 K10 is equipped with a 1995 6.5 with the banks sidewinder turbo system.

Post some pics and does he sell a kit for the sidewinder setup.  I just broke down and bought a Blazer dual kit to get mine going as it was cheap and mandrel bent, but I eventually want to put the Banks kit I have on it.

If it is this place, they still sell 6.2L headers: http://www.stans-headers.com/

could you take a picture of the whole engine bay?  It looks like you still have the AC box... and the turbo looks like one for a 73-87 setup as I thought the 6.5 setup for the 88-99 trucks were further back?

our truck was purchased in 1995 with a 6.2 diesel and the old banks sidewinder turbo system. shortly after that we needed to repower the truck so we purchased a 1995 GM crate 6.5 but used all the accessories off of the old (6.2) motor including the Banks sidewinder turbo (we did rebuild the turbo)  so you are correct it is the old style banks system.

Looks like you have the stock manifolds on there...
Looks like Stan's did a new exhaust from the downpipe back...
Wondered if a bigger pipe from the turbo back would make a difference
Did you notice a change in boost?

the banks sidewinder kit includes a new exhaust manifold for the passenger side (turbo side). our truck had the banks 3" exhaust but had a replacement muffler and non mandrel bent tail pipe from the muffler back (essentially a 2 1/2 pipe) adding the new 3" down pipe and 4" mandrel bent system (4" muffler) makes a big difference on how the turbo spools up (much quicker to spool) we have marine injectors and for the first time since they were installed I can feel the difference in power in the motor.  long hills that I used to go up in 3rd gear are now easily travelled in OD with no down shifting. haven't checked MPG yet, but I feel I will notice an improvement.

don't have a way to record video or sound but they are some video's of 6.5 with 4" pipes on you tube that sound similar.

here is a similar system, but I don't think the banks system has as much turbo whistle.

finally had a chance to check MPG, went on a 200 mile r/t to our RV site, mostly hwy mileage. ending mpg was 21.97mpg on winter mix diesel, should do a little better on summer mix. not bad for my 4x4 with 33 1250r 15 tires.
