Axle shaft seal?
« on: November 16, 2011, 01:48:01 AM »
I am putting my 84 10 bolt front end back together. When I took it apart, and pulled the axles out there was no seal where the axle goes in to the tube. Just wondering if this is the part that was missing. http://m.napaonline.com/parts/PartsList.aspx?t=%3fNe%3d25000%26Ntt%3d%26%3fNe%3d25000%26%3fNe%3d25000%26N%3d599001%2b101984%2b50014%2b2014036%2b27907%26Ntk%3dCategory

On mine when I rebuilt it there was a seal on the inside of the tube on both sides, where the axles meet the pumpkin.  There was no axle tube seal on the outside/end of tube.  The seal there fits into the backing plate assy.

Not really, the only one is the big one I mentioned on the backside of the backing plate, the spindle bearing has a seal that is inside of the spindle that mount on the shaft.

There is no seal at the outer end of the axle tubes.  The machined-flat, back side of the axle shaft's yoke fit very close to the tube opening.  This keeps out the stones, but water and mud can get in there.  The insides of the axle tubes are always dirty which makes it a pain every time you need to remove and install the shafts (its easy to get the splines dirty while installing them and then of course the dirt ends up inside the diff).  It would be nice if there were some sort of aftermarket axle tube seal for these trucks, but I've only seen them for Dana 30 and 44 Jeep axles, and that style wouldn't work on our axles because we don't have the room between the yoke and tube end.

there is a company who makes a seal for what you are talking about. but it says its for a d44. i emailed them to ask if it would fit a 10 bolt but they never replied.
