Turbo 400 205 Transfer case

Hello,

I just had a quick question about the interchangeability of a 205 from a 79 K20 to an 86 K10 with a sm465. The 86 has the 208 in it now and the 32 spline output. I am wondering if the 205 from the 79 would be a direct blot up? I think it is a 205 because it has the straight shift 4lo N 2wd 4h, would have thought it had a 203 but i dunno.  Anyway I have read about an 8 or 6 bolt pattern depending on the year would that be the adapter from the trans to the T case? Also would the length of the shaft be different? So basically I am asking can I use the 205 from the 79 k20 in my 86, or would I have to buy an adapter or is it basically imposable?

If you can find a  adapter from a 465  to a 205 . you might be able to do it that way

Even if it has the 8 bolt "race track" pattern, the 205 that came with the TH400 will not work. THe 205s that came with the TH400 had a larger input bearing, and will only work behind a TH400 mounting adapter.

If you are looking to put a 205 behind an SM465 you need a 205 housing that came from behind either an SM465, or the TH350. These have the smaller input bearing, and will work assuming the correct input shaft is used.

The 205 on the sm465 is 8 bolt pattern, but also is 10 spline. The th400 is a 32 spline. So like engineer was saying it won’t work unless you get a new shaft idk if they even make one. Now post 86 sm465 can have the 32 spline but in order to find a 205 that would just bolt up you need a 205 off a 400

I do have an 86 with a 32 spline and I can easily find the adapter but would the actual transfer case from the 400 work with a SM 465 adapter? I also am wondering now would a 700R4 with a 205 work with the sm465 adapter? The thing is I don't have a 205 now I have a cracked in half 208 but if I could pick up the transfer case from a 700R4 with a 205 would they work or does the 700 have a different spline count.  I know about the 400 having 32 splines as does my sm465 but does the 700 have 32 splines or something different(thought it had 27)? I can get a rebuild 700R4 with a Cast Iron transfer case (assuming 205 gotta check it out) for $150. So just trying to find a 205 to mate up to a SM 465 with a 32 spline output, and can't find any in the yard, so looking for an alternative. 

So right now I have an 86 SM465 mated to a 208 with a cracked in half 208

I can get a 700R4 with a 205 will it work with an SM 465 adapter?

I can also get a 205 from a Turbo400 with a 32 spline output, will it work with the sm465 adapter?

Sorry for all the questions but just still a little unsure.

700 should be 32 spline. I didn’t know they matted a 700 and 205, doesn’t mean it never happened but i didn’t know. Don’t think any trans adapter will just work with another trans. but again that what i know. But that 205 should work fine.

700r is 27 spline   400 is 32 spline     These are the outputs .the transfer case has to be the same spline.    If the 465 you have is 32 spline and the 205 off of the t400 is 32 spline you need a adapter to put them together


A th350 is 27 spline when a 205 was on one of these it had a spud shaft that mated them together

You can put a 205 on a 700. you will have to use a spacer or buy a shorter output shaft
