Title: Installing a trans temp gauge - where to install T-fitting, and what size?
Post by: bake315 on August 15, 2018, 02:38:47 PM
Hi guys,

I bought a trans temp gauge for my '87 R30 and was wondering where along the "hot" line to the cooler would be the best place to install a T-fitting.  Also, what is the size of the line?  I want to make sure I buy the right fitting.  The sensor itself came with the Autometer gauge - I don't recall the thread size of it offhand.  Thanks!

some trans have ports for pressure gauges. so what im asking is what trans do you have??? and if you install it into the hot line you prob want it as close to the trans as you can safely do. but i dont think your trans temp will drop in a foot or so.

Any convenient location between the transmission outlet port and initial cooler, which generally works out to be within about 24" of the wet cooler.  Be sure that sender protrusion into the fluid flow is not restrictive.  Also be mindful of grounding the sender body to establish a complete circuit.  For a hefty price, inline sender manifolds (https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/temperature-sender-manifolds?SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Ascending&tw=temperature%20sender%20manifold&sw=Temperature%20Sender%20Manifolds) are available.

The factory cooler lines are 5/16" steel.  Connect the cooler line to the sender manifold using inverted flare fittings.  Double flare the line for a strong and effective fluid seal.
