What's a good coil to plug into my 87?
« on: May 20, 2002, 05:52:00 PM »
Trying to do some simple nickel/dime upgrades at the moment and the ignition seems like a good place to start.  I've read up on the Jacobs Omni series but it's been discontinued.  It sounded like something worth having.  Anybody know anything about this stuff?

The stock coil should do just fine, there are a lot better ways to gain performance without wasting $ on a coil. What do you have a TBI 350?

Yep, TBI 350.  So what would you suggest other than a coil?  Pretty much I know nothing about any type of fuel injection.  Only ever owned carbed stuff before so I'm starting from square one.  What I'm looking for is something that would improve mileage and possibly deliver more power.  Exhaust is already duals from the cat with no muffler...  The tranny's got the Corvette servo and TC.  Other than that, I'm dealing with an engine that's lived a hard life pulling trailers with 33s on 3.42s and has racked up almost 178k to date.

So as far as bolt on performance, You can change the Prom in the ECM with a Hypertech chip, run a 160 Thermostat. Good power increase and driveability, have you done anything like that yet?

I haven't done anything at all to this truck yet except RTV the front hub, which started leaking again.  It needs a radiator but that's gonna have to wait a couple weeks till it fits in the budget.  In the winter here the temps get into the single digits sometimes.  Will the 160° be warm enough then when it's coupled with the 4-row radiator I'm gonna buy?  Even with a shot radiator and the stock 180° thermo it runs like 185° on the highway and under 210° cruising through sand.  What other benefits are there to be gained with a coller t-stat?

i have heard the msd spark magnifer is good to have. It makes yuor spark plugs fire more intense and longer to burn more fuel. A spacer that goes between the throttle body and manifold is a good cheap ( about 80 bucks up north) and seemed to make a differance on my 87 crewcab. Anything you can do to improve the way these slugs breath is where the secret to improving power is.
