please help finding correct dimmer switch.
« on: November 06, 2018, 05:37:51 PM »
hello, new here and looking for guidance...
i just bought a 1984 c10 square body and im trying to get the gremlins sorted out before winter storage. the problem is my high/low beam siwtch down on the column is broken/not working correctly. i bought a new one off of amazon and the bracket does not line the pin hole for the rod correctly. my steering column is a tilt steering if that makes a difference? every site i looked up all gave this same switch so i thought it was right but it does not fit?

i am attaching 3 pics showing what i ordered and the OEM plug that failed.
i verified the part on amazon, rockauto and   before buying and all three show only this part for my truck?
as you can see in the 2nd pic the new bracket sets the plug lower so the rod can not reach the hole to push it?

well i found one today in a local junk yard...
the contacts need cleaned so i am not 100% sure if it works yet or not. it was on a Pontiac steering wheel though?
after searching a little for a Pontiac dimmer switch i found this:
http://www.2040-parts.com/steering-column-mounted-dimmer-switch-chevy-caprice-impala-delta-88-98-electra-i42900/

ive yet to found a new replacement online for it yet though? is it possible to someone to put a tilt steering wheel from a Pontiac in a C10?

What's confusing is the part I am trying to replace has a square area near the hole is for the rod to push..
The photo for the 2nd one you posted is round. Maybe it's an updated part? I wonder if the frame aligns the part for the rod?

Ok, thanks for the help irish_alley!
So I'm guessing at some point they swapped out a non tilt steering coulmn for a tilt from a different vehicle?
