Yet more header questions
« on: October 14, 2008, 08:35:23 PM »
I'm finally staring to put the truck back together and I have some exhaust questions.  I'm going with long tubes/dual setup on this truck.
How low do the collectors sit?
I've got an old set of "Mr Gasket" headers that came with the motor on it now.  I don't see any clearance issues with the spring hangers like other folks have, but trying to make these clear the transfer case might be a problem.

I "think" they came of a Camaro, but not really sure.  By the time I bolt a reducer to the passenger side, it looks like I'll be hitting the front drive shaft (to be specific, the u-joint setup off the front of the transfer-case)  I could use a torch and bend them, and get creative with the exhaust fittings, but if it would save a bunch of time, I'll just buy new.

IIRC, state inspections don't allow "flex" pipe, unless it came from the factory that way.

I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.

well if they wont work I have these http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EDL%2D68722&N=700+115&autoview=sku maybe you could make them work. They are used and the air tubes have been removed and holes welded shut. Im sure you would have to have a y pipe made with these. Just an idea

Thanks for the offer!  I can make these work, but if the "proper" ones would save me the hassle well...

I was browsing on Summits' site, I see Heddman makes an offset reducer.  That might be the ticket.

Quick update,

I managed to get the exhaust on.  I had bought a header back dual kit, but I had to do a little rework on the passenger side.  Evidently the collectors on the headers sit higher off the ground, and further toward the rear than the "proper" ones.  The drivers side I had to bend the shifter bracket as trying to put it in gear I was hitting hard on the collector.

I got mine from Summit, I believe it was the "Flowtech" set. http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+4294923429+4294922451+4294908216+4294840140+4294908181+115+4294925074 I wanted mine to exit behind the rear wheels.

IIRC, a member has used the 2wd set that Chris sells work on a 4wd, if you wanted it in stainless

I like Chris' system, but how do you get it to work with the X-pipe on a 4wd truck.....  Unless you cut off the X to replace it with straight pipes or an H-pipe, it would sit too low due to the transfer case being in the way....

Yes the X-pipe wouldn't work on a 4wd.  Check this post, page 3 "86 chevy silverado" posted a couple of pics where he used Chris's system with an "h" pipe instead.http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=9333.15

I didn't use crossover pipe in mine, I want to see if this setup rots off in the first year. :D

I just stumbled on this thread and thought I'd comment.
Chris's exhaust is a good bang for the buck and the pypes exhaust sounds awesome (granted I have a worked over big block). It can be adapted to a 4wd with little work and creativity (read the post). I could not find an 2 1/2" exhaust for the 4wd and refused to go with the 2 1/4".
I am going to weld mine together with bolt on flanges in some spots for easy removal in the future. Post any questions if you care to, I'll stay tuned.

Hmph looks like Chris just needs to make things easier to look at in the Store, and have a pic with an H-Pipe for 4WD trucks ;D :P

Did you try the System without the Crossover pipe in place first???  Just curious as to what difference your H-pipe is making you???  I have 2.5 True Duals on my '77 K25(They were already on the Truck, when I got ahold of it), and I have been wondering if it would be worth the effort adding an H to my system....

I didn't try straight duels first. When I put the system together I wanted to do it one time, so I did it right. The balance tube (H-pipe) has been dyno proven over and over, the X-pipe being a little better, both have a different exhaust tone as well. I do wish I was able to pull off making the X-pipe work (and I tried). That thing takes up too much room, its either the transfer case or the X-pipe. On the flip side the H-pipe is cheap and easy to install. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D642025&N=700+4294921571+115&autoview=sku

I could add his pic, but it would be seriously hard to explain that the H won't come with it.....  I guess I could post a link to the post though...

It would be nice if the system could be available without the X pipe or with the H pipe instead for the 4wd guys but pypes doesn't offer an H pipe and it comes as a kit only through Chris unless you want to purchase the pieces separately from pypes. The kit comes with nice hangers and clamps also which would add up if purchased separately.
The kit through Chris costs over $100 less than the pypes site;
http://www.pysales.com/iwwida.pvx?;PRODUCTS_DTL?cat=X251530%20%20%20&COMP=ppe
The kit used to have optional 3" tailpipes for about $50 more but have been discontinued a while ago.
The point is you basically get the x pipe for free which cost $136 alone, Get the kit and sell the X pipe or put it on another vehicle (I'm using mine on my chevelle). I have about $500 into my entire system including headers. :)

If pypes sells them seperately I can get them seperately.  A few months back they wouldn't sell them seperately so I removed the "pieces" from the catalog.

They have made a lot of changes on their site and I dont see any tailpipes listed for any vehicle anymore. Thats odd. I wonder if I had to call them for pricing on the tailpipes previously, I think thats how I found out the 3" pipes were no longer available. That can't help sales.
