Driven divided by brive. It should be stamped on the ring gear. Ex 41:12

L and R are interchangable. Any year of the same axle with the same lug pattern will work.

if you don't find a stamp on the rear axle, you can figure your differential gear ratio as follows, raise and support the rear of the truck so both wheels are off of the ground. place a mark on your rear drive shaft, rotate the tire on your drive axle two full turns while counting the revolutions of the drive shaft, divide this number in half.  this will give you your gear ratio.

my stock gears were 3.73 in our 85 k10 diesel.

for more info on specific differentials for your rig you can go to Randy's Ring & Pinion. look up info by make model and year.

you can turn the wheel once and count the number of turns the drive line make

or you can turn the wheel twice and divide the result by 2 for a more accurate result.

Since you have it apart you can find the numbers stamped on the ring gear and divide it without having to estimate what the ratio is.

if you know or count the number of teeth in the ring gear and pinion gear, then you can go to Randy's Ring & Pinion site

http://ringpinion.com

and use their gear calculator to get your gear ratio.

Ya'll are making this MUCH harder than required.
If you have the cover off, roll the ring gear over until you find the tooth count marked on it and divide.

The picture below shows the marking on the ring gear: 15 41 = 2.73

2.56:1   =    41,16
2.73:1   =    41,15
3.07:1   =    43,14
3.08:1   =    40,13
3.08:1   =    37,12
3.31:1   =    43,13
3.36:1   =    37,11
3.42:1   =    41,12
3.55:1   =    39,11
3.73:1   =    41,11
4.10:1   =    41,10
4.11:1   =    37,9

Here's another pic of the numbers. This was on my 3.40 ratio 12 bolt.
