ok hers's the problem i put a new alternator and battery on the truck and im still not able to hold charge can anybody figure out what the problem is. If the truck sits for about 30 minutes it goes dead again if anybody can help i would love the imput. Thanks
-
What's the charging system output?
-
im sure ive not had time to check cause i had to leave for work. What should it be up to while the truck is running..thanks
-
Run it at about 2,000 RPM with the headlights on. You should have at least 13.5Volts or higher
-
So after 30 minuets of sitting, the battery is dead? I would say you have one huge parasitic draw. It should be easy to find if its that big.
-
ok i left the charger on for 6 hours at 2amps and truck started fine ill let it sit for a while and see what happens if it dies again do you think i have a wire grounding out some where and if so is there a easy way to find it thanks...
-
One step at a time. Instead of guessing check the output voltage to make sure it's charging. If it is the next thing to do is check for a parasitic draw.
-
ok i found the problem today come to find out the hood was hitting the new battery so problem solved thanks everybody...
-
yup, a dead short, thats a parasitic draw.... of sorts.....
-
so i figured quick fix change the battery and be done thanks for all the help...
-
Holy sparks, batman!
-
so you had a top post battery. was the hood getting hot
-
no the hood never got hot but that was the only thing i changed from being able to make contact with anything i put a piece of rubber mat on the battery and truck worked fine so i assumed that was it but if there are anymore ideas i welcome them all thanks for the help....
-
Do you have insulation on the top part of the hood if not any Burnt part of the hood from making contact. Is it top post?
-
its top post and it has no burnt spots under the hood and no insalation...
-
Could it just be a poor connection if the battery was to ground out when the truck was running i.e. battery touching the hood it would kill the engine imidiatly due to not enough power getting to the coil. So I don’t think that’s the problem I would be looking into poor connections
