292 I-6 Question

Just for kicks...How much power would you have if you took a 292, put in bigger valves, ported the head, used a thinner head gasket, 4bbl intake and carburetor, HEI distributor, and headers? You think at least 290hp?

In two words...
Aye Lot
Don't shy away from inline engines. Those puppies are full of torque. Ever see an 18-wheeler with a V-8 or V-10? Well, I haven't. They are inline engines for a reason
Back in my Mustang days, I had an old '68 with a 200 cid inline 6 banger. I took that puppy out and put in a Maverick 250 inline 6 after I bored it .40 over and shaved the cylinder head/intake. That thing would scream! It would tear up my 289 V8. I could burn the tires off of it. I loved that engine, and, it got me 22mpg in my old Stang w/ a 3.20 rear 3spd.

You can make 250 out of one. Turbo charge it and you really can put some power down. (It couldn't be stock though)

If this is part of your "dare to be different" kick, I definitely approve of this one. I always thought a mildly built 292 with
Weber triple side draughts
would be awesome.

Yep Capt beat me to it. Clifford perfomance. Stumbled upon it after I nastily destroyed my sixer when I got my V8

I'm surprised to see so much positive feedback about this motor. Usually its "no way!, that's just a waste of time man!", or "you can dump money into an inline 6 and have the same power as a stock 305". Very inspiring!
I'd like for someone to tell us just how it feels to drive a hopped up 292 on the street. And how it compares to a V8.
I think about dropping a hot 292 in my truck every now and then.

Come to think of it...what kind of torque converter would ya have to use for a more potent 292? I think they'd be max'd out on the powerband by like 4,000 RPM. Stock V8 converter? ...Hmm.

292's can be spun to 6000 in almost stock form.

So what kind of power could we be dealing with for the street? No lump porting. Just bigger valves, 4bbl, headers, mild porting, more powerful ignition. At least 225hp? Would it go similar to a 350 for example?
This is a cool engine.

Really, the 292 or 250 would be a decent motor for say an el camino. Something you can use as your work truck. It'd get a small boat to the lake or take some trips to home despot and such.

Actually, I agree. An old El Camino or Malibu. The 292 seems to look just right in their engine bays.

I don't. IMO, the only thing that looks "just right" under the hood of an older muscle car is a big block.
