Intake ports
« on: July 29, 2005, 05:03:00 PM »
I have an 85 Suburban with a 454 and was thinking of a new intake manifold and wanted to know how to determine what shape the ports are and do you need intake spacer plates for the big block engine in this truck.Weiand shows these plates on their site for tall machined blocks. How can you tell if you need them or not.Thanks...

In 85 I'm pretty sure that would be the small peanut ports.  I think they're like 210 cc. or something rediculously small.  That motor shouldn't be a tall deck either.  You shouldn't need any sort of spacers.  Just bolt on and go.

Spacer plates are only required on tall deck blocks.  1Ton trucks used them.  All 1/2T and 3/4T truck used the passenger standard deck height BBC.

Anything after 1976 used peanut port heads or small oval heads.  They typically flow 208cc on the intake side and are excellent heads for the application they were designed for, low rpm pulling.

The easiest way to determine what you have is to get the numbers off the head under the valve cover.

I don't believe even 1 ton trucks used tall decks.  Just early 427's that went in medium duty trucks like street sweepers and such.  I don't think any 454 was ever a tall deck in stock form.

Sorry, that should have read above 1 tons used....

All tall deck BBC's were either 366 or 427.
