hey yall i have a 1979 chevy k10 with a 4 speed/granny gear.
1st gear is fine but when i get to 2nd and 3rd it bogs down wayyy too bad i can barely make it up a hill i have to go all the way back to first. i was thinkin could i regear my tranny to solve this problem or what should i do? any help would be appreciated.

I am not aware of any different gearing combinations available with that transmission. I have the same tranny in my truck and hate the huge jump between gears. To help alleviate the problem you can drastically lower your rear gear ratio. The best solution though is to get a lot more power under your hood.

Add a bigger engine or change rear gears as stated above. You could also do a Auto tranny swap......

well to start off i bought the truck because it was my dream truck (manual tranny) so i dont wanna do a auto swap. and the engine i got in it which is a 350 its pushing close to 380 hp so hp shouldent be a problem. as far as gearing i got a 86 k20 with 3/4 ton axles i was wondering if i could swap them axles under my truck for more towing capabilities cause i do alot of towing could this be done? if not what would u recommend gearing the rear to?

You can swap 3/4 ton running gear under it, but it will take some work. Having 380HP shouldn't be a problem banging threw the gears with the tranny you have. I would suggest 3.73-4.10 rear ratio if you keep the drivetrain you have now. Me personally, I'd drop in a TH400 and call it good. These trannies are very strong as well as the 4L80E. No problems with lugging down a motor with these. Just an option.

if i swap out the axles i have to swap the transfer case too am i right or wrong?

not to my knowledge....all I think you would have to change are the drive shafts cause now you are using 1350 joints.

well if i swap out driveshafts im goin from a np208 off the 3/4 ton truck to a np203 on my truck so if im not mistaken they have differant splines.

As far as I know, you should be able to get a driveline built with whatever joints, plines etc you need.

You can get a driveshaft made to match both pieces, or you could run one of the hybrid u-joints if they have one to match the driveshaft/yoke.

I have a 77 chevy truck with a 350 and a 205 t-case. It has 3:08 gears and 31's. I have no problem pulling hills, even with a trailer. You must have something else wrong, give me some more details and I might be able to help you out. I would hate to see you go though the work of changing axles and gear and not gaining anything.

Chevtruck is right. If that engine really is putting out around 380 hp you should have no problems. Maybe 180 hp...

naw i know its puttin out 380 hp cause i built it and had it dyno myself but if i put a trailer behind it i have problems but without a trailer it just bogs down. as far as what gears my axles have or anything like that everything i said is all i know if theres a specific detail u want to know i can find out! You should check you clutch and gear oil and make sure both are good. Also realize that a bearing may be sticking in the trans. I don't know much about the 465, but a friend went divorced with a 205 and an M20 rock crusher and his had bad bearings.

Does it buck and kick when it looses power? What kind of fuel system are you running? What kind of igntion system? What tire size and gear ratio....in you know the ratio? Any info like that would be helpful.

no it dont do that when it looses power, right now stock carb and intake but im workin on a new edelbrock system.
