Title: Sport Package Question
Post by: Breadfather on August 10, 2015, 09:52:26 PM
Hey all, it has been a while as I have been moving and during my move I blew up my 77 K10, but that is another story for another day.  This weekend I picked up another one, and after a rough trip home(trailer issues) again another story for another day, I discovered some interesting info on my new one.

Looking at the SPID I noticed that it had a deluxe sport package option on it and I got to wondering what that all meant.  Well apparently it means it came with a light bar(someone cut the old one out but the base is still there), some very 70's stickering, which I can still see the faint outline of in places, and a few other little things.  After several hours searching and much head scratching I have only been able to find one other truck that is similar(happened to be on this board) but it is a different color.  I have found pictures of many step side ones but very few fleet side and none with the light bar, 4wd, 400, and black.  Most of what I am finding is 76, 78, and 79 very few 77s. It also has the blue interior with the bucket seats.

Long story to a short question, is this truck rare, and is it worth restoring to original or just rolling with it?  I prefer the stock look of these trucks as opposed to the lifted version but I am curious on the paint/sticker scheme as I will be starting body work this year. Anywhere I can track this info down? I can't resize the picture on the iPad so it won't let me post it.

I'm trying to get the picture of the SPID on here, let's see if this works.

Taken from Chevrolet Pickups 1973-1998 by John Gunnell...
"A new option for pickups in general was the Sport package.  It included special hood and body side striping, and white-spoke or Rally wheels.  The Sport tape stripes followed the b0dy feature lines and continued in tiara fashion across the roof.  On Fleetside models, the "Chevy Sport" lettering appeared on the upper sides of the cargo box.  Similar lettering went on the rear spare tire cover of Stepside trucks"

I have been able to track down some sales brochures and the vehicle information kit on the GM heritage site has a lot of stuff in it but nothing about the sport package.  If anyone has a picture of a black, fleet side 77 k10, with the sport package, and the light bar, I would sure like to see it.

Go to any bookstore chain and look for the author books, there are a couple pictures of that package.

That is a great idea. I never thought about that.  Any extra value in the truck if it retains its original "deluxe sport package" look?  It seems like as the 67-72 short beds get a lot harder to find, the mid 70s short beds are starting to jump a lot in the value as well.  I'm not in it to make money, I just don't want to change it if it is a "more rare" truck.

To a purist it may be worth more but since there are no hard numbers of production it is a matter of personal preference.  I am not fond of step sides.  I would rather have a longbed but that is my personal preference.  I like them stock and the plainer the better but that is me.  Value is in the eye of the beholder.  Big difference in price of a midwest truck versus something down in Texas...

The 9J9 is the COPO option for the "sport rail" (Chevrolet called it a Rollbar)  Based on what I have read from Alex (resident SPORT guru)  I would say this could be a SPORT truck and I would consider it rare..

The Chevy Sport option in 76 and 77 was a COPO

Z77 RPO code for Chevy Sport/GMC Street Coupe was not used until 1978 and ended in 1981

I guess I will have to contact the GM heritage site and see if I can get the dealer invoice, for $50 it may be worth it just to have either way.  I can't believe for how many trucks were made in these years how hard it is to find info on the sport package.  Like I've said I've seeN many step side 2wd ones, a few step side 4wd ones, and only 1 fleet side 4wd with the light bar.  And it was a different color, different engine, different interior, etc.

I downloaded the 103 page "info kit" from GM heritage and there is no mention in there of a sport package, the best info I can find is at the below link, on page 7

It looks like the bottom one is information for the 76 model but base on that it shows that you could only get the Black truck with red interior?  Mine is black with the blue bucket seat interior, do you know if they changed the regulations on the interior combo in 77? Or did someone just slip in the interior they wanted, since they were doing a COPO form on the color anyways?  Interesting stuff.

I think with a COPO you could probably get whatever you wanted, but...

Well I contacted the GM archive center and after talking to the guy over the phone he informed me that the dealer invoice shows really nothing more than the SPID tag.  But he did give me the number of someone else who will be doing some research on it for me as well.  We shall see what come up.

Heard back from the GMHC today and they've got nothing on these trucks either.  I guess I'll just have keep my eyes and ears open for similar trucks to try and get more info.  I found another forum with the most information in one place about sport package trucks if anyone is interested.

80SPORT is Alex here...
And I consider the Sports rare.  I would document and picture EVERYTHING as is.
I could consider yours a COPO 77 Sport.

I figured he was wandering around somewhere over here.

I am sure some square body fan down the road will come across one and start googling as I did so I wanted to make sure if he or she came across this page there's as much info as possible.

I have taken many photos and I know that my truck has been changed over the years, mostly engine compartment, but I figured it was good to have them just in case.  I pulled the bumper that came on it off as it was some big ugly aluminum thing that was added somewhere in its life, and swapped it with the one I had on my other 77 before I sold it.  I'm just hoping to have it back to original looking one day, as you said they seem to be quite rare, and I think it would be awesome to see one driving down the road in all of it's technocolor glory.

As I gain or get any additional info, it will be posted here.

I can't lend any more help on this topic, but I can say that I'm slightly upset that my truck isn't in its original condition. My SPID shows the 9J9 Deluxe Sport Equipment with Blue bucket seats in a black truck. 😒

Here's some pics of my dad's '77 C10 2wd Chevy Sport back in 1982.  That's me in the pics I was 3.  In 1996 it was my first truck.  The Third pic of the mustang with the truck in the backgrounds is how it looked in the early 90's.  Someone keyed the stripes up on his truck and you couldn't get all the stripes and they were super expensive so dad ended up just removing all the stripes with a heat gun.  He never cared about it like he used to after that.  He took care of it properly but it was just another old chevy after that.  He was pissed every time he saw that truck for at least 6 months because he bought it for the stripes and lightbar.  He doesn't like white cars and trucks but that one was special to him.

Fourth pic is of when I had it when I was 18 or so.

Last pic is in 2000 or so?  when I had dad help me try to reconstruct the stripes...  Colors are all wrong but hey I did it in paint back in the day.  He used to have a piece of the stripes he peeled off in case we needed it later but we can't find it any more.  Back then I was still new to internet and couldn't find anything on a checvy sport so we did our best to recreate it.

One thing he did tell me was it didn't come with the wheel arch trim or wheel center caps.  He said a few months after he bought it new he added the correct 77 yellow stripe wheel arch trim, wheel center caps and the lights under the bumper.

Mainly things different on those trucks are the Stripes, Lightbar, Upper Lights and Aux Lights Switch where dual tanks switch usually goes.  It looks just like a dual tank switch.   No Wheel arch trim and center caps.

Jeep guys used to stop me at gas stations and ask me where I bought the lightbar.  When I told em it was factory they got all mad like I was lying...  oh well.

I never saw the Aux Lights with dual tanks...  Bet thats especially rare.  My dad's 77 Sport had only the Aux Light Switch, but it was where the normal dual tank switch goes.

I found these old ads I had saved a few years ago from searching online.  First two are 1977 Models.  Last one is 1978.

That’s how I feel about it. Especially with the 400, 4x4, and fleetside, with the interior set up. Unfortunately a loose wire under the dash somewhere has had it sitting for over a year as other projects have taken precedence. But I keep having people trying to buy it from me and have been tempted but keep holding off. Just need to get it rolling again as my weekend beater until I can get it restored one day.

Hello,

I am brand new to this forum. I am in the middle of a restoration, and I am desperately looking for a picture of my trucks original paint. I have the RPO sheet and the paint codes, but it says "Chevy Sport 2 tone" and "Chevy Sport Equipment". I know it has been resprayed before, so I am not sure the current paint layout is correct. Does anyone know how to figure out what it looked like from the factory?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You would need to provide more info than that for anyone to help. The SPID label, Vin, pics of the truck, YMM at the very least.

If the Paint Job will be too much, maybe have a vinyl wrap/stripes made up for it.  They were vinyl stripes from the factory.

I found some more evidence of the old vinyl stickers. Does anyone know where i can get the specs for this sticker kit so i can have one made? Size, font, color? I know the 2 colors now to be paint code 25 and 26 but there is a 3rd which i suspect to be 14 Silver Poly.

Either find someone who knows how to do custom paint or a place that does graphic wraps or DIY
