Title: That 1980 C10 I keep talking about...PICS Finally
Post by: JohnnyPopper on June 10, 2020, 11:08:20 AM
So she sat getting uglier and uglier for 10 years, non-op in Ramona, a mountain town about 30 miles from San Diego.

Started right up, trans engaged to and fro, laid down 8 c-notes.

Got her home and began the journey.

Finally laid down some base and clear on the firewall, after some attempts to amend the sorry FACTORY mess. Not perfect but a far cry from the way she came into the world.

That is the stock color; Dark Camel Poly- a beautiful color imho.

So the thought is to clean off the primer and go with the patina underneath?

I have a correct stock replacement hood.

Going with a period correct V8 4BBL, 383 though. TH350 behind, don't know what shape it's in.

Tried to send 6 pics, too large.. will send more

Yes, she's pretty much rust free. I've been trying to load pics, but even though I put them through the head shrinker the site says they're too big... ???

Thinking about having a shop do the cam break in before installing the engine.

The truck dismantling shop has a rig to hold the block, cycle the water, and basically run the process.

Nice to know the cam is good to go before final.

Thoughts?

I agree, prob is that I live in a condo, she is non-ambulatory, so I would have to run in the garage for 20 mins...

I've heard all my life that an HOA is a micro form of socialism.

In this case, they look for things to try to ping you with, and if you don't respond timely, they 'summon' you to one of their beat down / extraction meetings.

But hey, if I were in their shoes (never would be) I would look for reasons to justify my existence too...

Title: Re: That 1980 C10 I keep talking about...PICS Finally
Post by: JohnnyPopper on July 12, 2020, 10:43:28 PM
Thanks man!

The trick is temperature:

I use a blow dryer (BD) to dry the object first, then heat the object to above outdoor temp.

Then I heat the can of primer and paint for about 5-8 mins. This will create two things. Good flow, and extra pressure. Shake well...

Use the B D to dry the prime between coats.

Do the same with paint.

After the final coat, gently BD the paint till it sets up.

That job took about 2 hours to complete.

I don't know yet, haven't thought that far out... ::)

My intention is to clean up everything I have access to, but not lose sight of the goal- to get her back on the road at some point.

Believe it or not, the original paint is not in that bad of shape, so my strategy may be to clean up everything that is not visible to the eye, and let it look like a patina queen.

But when you open the doors, and the hood- BOOOOM!

Thanks for your encouragement! Means alot

So I got some new sneakers for my K10

The 31's I had on it are good enough to run the '80 till she gets a proper fitting.

Found rally wheels, restored them, 8" rear, and 6.5" for the front.

Cleaned up the K10 wheels while at it, and used a more narrow beauty ring. Much better fit.

I went with 33's this time, not stock, but I think that is the proper size for this rig.

Just feels right, AND I pick up another inch of height.  8)

I hope so. I have been working on interior parts all day. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201104/0cda70fee169eec7210ad02cc36c9459.jpg)

My truck was missing several interior parts...glove box being one of them. The black is the finished one.

Ummmm no the interior is gold/brown but I’m changing it all to flat black.

Since it was missing several pieces and those that are there are pretty much destroyed I have purchased a replacement for almost everything in the interior but I have stuck to stock parts from other trucks and of course with that you end up with blue ash tray, gold glove box etc etc.

I am doing 3m vinyl wrap on the parts so they are still original under the wrap, I’m not destroying them just changing them.

Good thing there is a lot of interest in these models, good for finding parts. Aftermarket parts are plentiful, can almost build an entire truck... ;D

I'm thinking about leaving the patina on the '80, even have a rusty front fender.

I'll dial in the engine compartment, interior, bucket seats, New paint inside, dash and door panels. Red oak bed panels, 1/4 cut.

So, kind of a sleeper, until you look under the hood and inside...BOOM!  8)

I've got a 383 stroker engine for her, so it should be pretty fast.

Thanks! Just need to get her done!!!

Actually Covid helped me in April/May to get the front end finished and reassembled and paint the firewall.

Don't know if this has appeared on your radar, but someone on the forum posted that a mixture of molasses and water 1:9 ratio dissolved Rust. I cleaned all of my front end components in a full size trash can with a lid. It just melts off. Some took longer, but it beat have to wire wheel everything.

It's Martini Tuesday, sighing off, had a great evening!

Yeah it's late, can't sleep.

Found a completely profound product: Flitz Metal Pre Clean

It's caustic, be prepared to protect your bio parts.

I had a bumper that was green with patina- melted if off!

I can't think of all the hours I have spent working to remove crap that this stuff just dissolves off in minutes.....

Not cheap, but the time saved is worth it. Grainger has it...

Hey Johnny!

For leather it depends on the piece specifically. If you have something leather that you want to restore I can definitely give you advice on that specific piece.

If you want to know just for general knowledge...I typically start by cleaning the leather thoroughly with Murphy’s oil soap and or leather/saddle cleaner. If the leather is stained or has water marks I soak it or sponge on water to even it out. Once those steps are complete a cycle of vigorous leather conditioner is applied over and over until you are satisfied. It’s not an easy process very time consuming but completely do-able.

Yes I used the pre-clean! Already finished a bottle and bought another. That stuff is amazing and when I post before and afters of what I used it on you will definitely get the credit. Thank you!

I have made some progress since last post but haven’t  put any pictures up in awhile.  Progress is slow but steady.

I have been harvesting olives from my olive tree. I will save you some for your martinis. lol

Wonderful!

I have a Italian leather jacket I bought about 20 years ago, shoulders showing some wear... Prob a different technique...

So glad you're happy with Flitz!! I love it! Like you said, 'game changer'... Can't believe the elbow grease I wasted.

Olives are great, I had a customer who grew blue olives, his juice was the best! Thanks, look forward to yours!!

Blue olives? That sounds insane and amazing at the same time.

Depending on the wear on the shoulders I may be able to help/guide you. Send me a pic of the wear when you have time. If it hasn’t worn through most likely can be saved.

Forgot to ask...when you put the 33s on the K10  did you have to lift it or already have a lift?
Even though my c20 isn’t 4x4 I would like to put bigger tires on it.  I have 33s on my daily driver. I’m comfortable with that size was wondering if the c20 could accommodate w/o lift.

Also you can replace the plastic hinge for your glove box on ebay. I saw someone selling just the hinge. It might still be available...let me know if you want the link.

No I didn’t have to put a lift on it, if I had gone larger it probably would’ve rubbed in or on undesirable areas.  The leather is not wearing through, it’s just lost some of the black tinting/dye?

I would try a leather color balm. There is one called “furniture clinic leather re-coloring balm” or
There is another product called “leather hero, leather color restore”.  I would give one of them a try. It’s not expensive.  Make sure you get the right color match.

My advice would be the first product, even though it’s for “furniture” leather is leather and a balm can be deposited more in the places that need it and then everywhere else for an overall finished piece.  Just make sure to clean it first. I find that leather cleaning products and conditioning products made for car interiors are some of the best as they are geared for high usage.

Be prepared for the process to take a few days and let the balm dry thoroughly between each coat. Keep at it until you are satisfied.

If done properly you won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Good luck!

Duh  ::)  much better view.

I landed the distributor so I can adjust the valve lash by doing one rotation.

It is NOT timed correctly. I just dropped it in, and taped down the position with the Vac advance nipple perpendicular to the block.

I have the crankshaft at TDC on #1 cylinder, in the firing position.

I marked 8 sharpy points on the rim of the distributor so as I make the rotation, I can adjust the lifters in each position relative to the firing order. 18436572

Or was it 8675309?  ::)

Just remembered that the guy who sold them to me sent me a pic, so before can be seen!

I just sent him these pics, he replied "do you want your 20.00 back?"  ;D

Kind of got carried away...

Definitely worth $20! Deals like that are hard to find. I like what you did with them and they would look nice on my truck.

Thanks Mike  ;)

I'm pretty happy with how they turned.

Paid a bunch to have them buffed out, but it took the guy 4 hours.

The seller thinks they're from the '70's, maybe someone has an opinion?

They have them for sale at a few places I have seen without the flames painted. Speedway is one of them and they run about $80 or so. They list for 1960-86 SBC Valve Covers. You made them look good with the flame painted.

WOW! That’s a major improvement from the before! I’m glad you found the pics.

Love the painted flames

Thx for all your support, PIA to get the paint into the groove, ended up realizing that perfection is lost on details of this sort.

Used 500 degree motor block paint, (sprayed into the lid of the paint can) small brush, then brake cleaner to clean up the over-paint.

Could have paid Carmen77 to do it right, but it will suffice for now.

Good news is I have quick release T-bolts to remove the covers at any time I feel the urge to make them perfect.

Johnny,

Don’t think I didn’t see the post where you mentioned selling “my obsession” in Nashville!

I’m actually trying to work out a plan to be in Nashville for the C10 Nationals.

Oh Carmenita,

You'll get to obsess soon enough! I'm pulling the rear window next week so I can paint the cab interior properly.

If you saw the color of her firewall, picture the cab and doors with that shine... 8)

Good bones on that truck. The color on the firewall is clean. It's gonna be a looker when she's done. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Nick! When the c-19 hit last year I made some progress.

All of the suspension components were disassembled and soaked in Molasses & Water, 1:9 ratio. It dissolves all the rust and gunk. Used a rubber based undercoating to seal them.

The firewall is the factory match, Going to do inside the cab the same, leave the patina'd paint on the outside.

About to drop the 383 back in, made a punch list of what needs to get done BEFORE there is little room...

Anyone seen a relay like this? Assuming it is a relay ::)

Looks factory with the ground strap, or not?

Well in light of no response AND the fact that I can't find replacements, it must be an aftermarket MacGyver rig.

Cant' say it's a bad approach, having trucks who have increased resistance on the solenoid wire when things are really HOT.

Whatever is going on there is ready for a funeral. Get that out of there and toss it in the trash.

Thanks guys  :)

It was connected to the starter. The male spade was occupied by the solenoid wire.

One of those funky leads was tied to the B+ post of the starter, the other to the solenoid terminal.

So in theory, the relay bypassed the B+ from the ignition switch, and fired the starter from a local HOT source of B+.

Thx bd!

I got inspired by something VZ said about being "period correct"...

So yeah, I am twitterpating about hearing her run.

Bit of a way to go, but since her heart will be in place, should go much faster.

Well back on track with completing this baby.

The 383's all socked in, under carriage work complete sans electrical.

I have thought of running the wiring to the passenger side inside the hollow area behind the firewall, out of the way of the wiper mechanism.

Has anyone seen that done?

I would say drop the harness over the bellhousing if you are trying to do a wire hide but that usually makes more sense if you've gone the smoothed firewall route. Personally, I would just keep the stock setup for what you have there.

I thought about the bell housing route, unfortunately after the motor was in. Perhaps I can still make it happen without too much wrangling.
