Title: My Build Thread, 78Chevyrado's 1978 C20
Post by: 78 Chevyrado on August 06, 2008, 06:31:58 PM
Here's the "finished" thread:

Here's what I started with, All original except the seats and wheels/tires.  One day before the wreck I had just fixed the AC and ordered the Cruise control Transducer, making the truck fully functional, and was finished working on it.

Here's where all the trouble and this thread started. >:( It's all smashed up, but the AC and cruise work like a charm. ::)

The front end suspension took a lot of the hit and everything was loose and making funny noises so I totally rebuilt the whole thing, From Steering box to balljoints to inner shafts. Here's a photo of the new front end stuff all painted and finished.

Here's some of the stuff in the boxes awaiting other parts so I can begin assembling it all.

While rebuilding the front end I bought new springs and decided to put a set of HD coils on it to raise the front a bit, instead of the LD coils I had on it.  I'm not sure exactly how much it's lifted yet since the truck is still a bit twisted from the wreck.  I won't know how much until the body and or frame is straightened out but I'll let yall know.  Here's a couple a before and after pics without the truck fixed yet, call em preliminaries...  ;D

That's all I have for now, Tomorrow I'm off to find a body shop I like that can straighten her back out again, but more's to come.

Got the truck aligned today.  They said I did pretty good aligning it myself to get it to the shop. I got pretty close on my toe in, the left was off by 0.114 degrees and the right was off by 0.019 degrees.  I did it with a string by myself.  The truck drives good now, and I like the ride from the new HD front coils.  There isn't much at all of the front end bounce most large vehicles have, so I love it.  Also It dang near won't lean in turns for nothing, So the new sway bar bushings are working very well.

The color will end up a Medium Silver with Red inserts.  I'm still not sure on the Silver, There's a darker silver on New Nissan maxias I like, but I'll have to go to a dealer and check it out.  I think the red will be that Dodge "Inferno Red Crystal Pearl", Every time I see a dodge that color go by I think i like it better and better.  I also like inferno red in person, When I took my car in for the oil change at the ford/dodge dealer I wandered the dealer lot and looked at the color and I like it even more now.  I'd like to stick with a stock color from a car manufacturer instead of mixing custom paint solely from the point of easier color matching for possible late damage and ease of finding touch up paints.  That small can of touch up paint they give you after a paint job can only sit on the shelf for so long in my experience.

That red is similar to Buick's crystal red jewelcoat. Nice color. Personally, I prefer the GM color. :D

Nice choice!  Mama's PT Cruiser is inferno red, and I wouldn't want any other color.  It really pops in sunlight, but looks good on the overcast days as well.

I went today and bought all the body parts I should need from Goodmark.  They're like 15 miles away so no shipping costs. ;D  I bought a rocker panel, Door shell, fender, inner fender and battery tray and support (it wasn't damaged, the tray's just rusty.)  All the parts look great, no nicks or dings whatsoever inside or out.  I gave up fairly quick on finding GM parts since it's not a restoration and I just need it fixed so I can drive it, and some body shops I talked to said they had good luck with them.  All I should have to have to body shop do is weld in the new rocker panel and pull out anything that was squashed in the pillar, and pull out the front bedside that was curled under a bit.  Then I can get to the painting.  I also decided I like the truck having a bit of rake to it so I bought a set of 1.5 inch lift blocks for the rear.  The HD Springs made the truck sit level, maybe even a bit higher in the front and I didn't like it so I'll try 1.5 in the rear.  If I don't like it I can always sell them and buy a different kit.  I'll see if I can get some pics tomorrow.

You should have let me know I sell Goodmark pieces and I could have got it for you cheaper and you could have picked it up.

Aww man!  I'll let ya know if I need anything else, thanks for the offer!

Here's a couple a more pics,  It ended up the front was a bit higher than the rear so I bought a superlift 1.5 lift block kit.  I also like it better with a little bit of rake so this fixed me right up.

I decided on the dumbo mirrors and went ahead and mounted them so that when I get the rocker panel done they can also weld up all the old mirror holes.

Here's a pic of the truck lifted (unknown measurement in front / 1.5 lift rear)  and with the new mirrors.  When my tires wear out I'll get a set of 285/75/16s for it.

I'm not going to two tone it for cost reasons.  So since I don't have to find a red and silver that go together, I can pick the one I like the best period.  I am going to paint it "Graystone metallic" code:16U from a 2008 silverdo. ;D  Sometime this weekend or early next week I'll start taking it apart for paint, I'll have some pictures to follow.  :)

Here's a pic of an '08 with my color on it

Got a little bit done today stripping it down.  Stil have to remove the windshield and rear window and the rest of the stuff in the doors.  I'll take the taillights and parking lights out after I drive it to the body shop.

I've got the truck stripped of all the parts i'm going to remove.  Since the fender trim and scottsdale logo come off from the back i'll leave them and let the shop remove them and give them back to me to put on later.  I have everything out of the interior except the seats and belts and dome light.  Otherwise i'm ready to go this week.  I only found one rusty spot on the whole thing, it's a rusty spot about an inch square around the left windshield drain hole (Pic below) with a new crescent shaped hole around it.  When the windshield was installed some of the sealer plugged the hole completely, the right side hole looks great.

Man I'm sorry to see such a nice original truck like yours get damaged   due to somebody else's negligence. That's a real shame because your truck looked very cherry before that happened.

I've been watching this thread since you first posted it. It just made me sick to see a truck like yours make it so long without any rust or major damage ever being done to it until this. I can only imagine how you felt.

Looks like you got her pretty much stripped down and about ready for the final bodywork and new paint. Dang insurance companies never pay you what the actual damages are.

Be sure to keep updates on the progress and as many pictures as you can. I'm quite interested as to how well the Goodmark fender fits. I've heard they are the best on the market as far as aftermarket fenders go on fit and finish.

I have never had any experience with Goodmark's fenders though. I do have a Goodmark cowl induction hood hood on my 86 K10. I am very impressed with the fit and finish of it. Hopefully their fenders are just as good. Good luck to you in getting your truck put back together better than it was...if that's possible! It sure is a nice one! ...Joe

Thanks chasedale.  I think the fender and door will do fine.  3 Chevy dealers around here said they have great luck using goodmark stuff, and the other body shops that had used their stuff gave thumbs up so I went with it.  I'll definetly have more pics a comin, and here's some now, the trucks all ready to go to the body shop monday or tuesday, whenever the parts I'm waiting on show up.  I got some new RH Door hinges and I found a set of OE Hood hinges  I also got a new hood from a friend since mines bent pretty good.  It's a stock replacement for 73-80.  It has the detail on the front the 79-80's do, but I always liked that so it's all good.  He bought the hood 5 or 6 months ago and somebody stole his truck, so with nothing else to do with it I bought it from him for cheap. ;D  It has the same brand on the box as the goodmark door i bought so i think it'll work out well.
I spent today looking for a new LH side window.  It's all scratched up from the lower seal that rubs on it, when the old one dried out it cut it up and it won't take tint, so I need a non scratched one so I can tint the windows since I can do it myself very easily while the windows are out and save some $$$.
Tomorrow I'm getting a new (to me) lista toolbox my dad got for my birthday.  I may paint it to match the truck.  Well see when I have the truck and box together... ;D

Here's the body shop I'm taking it to.  They have some NICE cars there.  They do show cars and daily drivers so I'm trying to go for something in the middle. http://www.brownandbrownprocustominc.com/services.html (http://www.brownandbrownprocustominc.com/services.html)

I scored all three pieces of trim for the grille at the junkyard today.  They polished up like new and only have 2 pin sized dings in them.  I repainted the black stripe on them and stuck them in my grille.

This also showed up today, GM NOS.
The standard wiper switch is the only thing on the truck that drives me nutty.  When it rains light you have to flip it on and off, flip it on and off, flip it on and off.  Flip it on and off NO MORE!  Finally got my pulse switch and module for it.

I checked out the link for the body shop that you will be using. Looks like they do some first class work there. I checked out the 79 K10 that they did a frame swap on. Looked really good. Would have turned out a lot better had the owner spent some extra money on cleaning and painting the frame and interior. It's a nice truck and all, but cutting corners like that when you already have it apart anyway doesn't make much sense to me, but it's not my truck. The body and paint look flawless though. Can't wait to see yours when it's all done. Any more updates yet? ...Joe

The shop has the truck apart and they test fitted the new door and fender and they're now working on the rocker panel.  When the new door was on it, the front 8-10 inches of the rocker was inboard about 1.5 inches too far compared to the door.  They have done some pulling to get the front of the cab back straight.  The lower part of the cowl where the damage is isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Here's some pics for yall.

Looking Good Keeny, doesn't look like it should be much longer 8) 8) Hey just curious, where did you find your NOS Pulse Switch and Module???  It drives me up the wall not having them on mine, and I think it may be a while before I can move the control to the column like I want....

Post by: 78 Chevyrado on September 22, 2008, 09:27:25 PM
It shouldn't be too long now.  They're going to fix the rocker and should have the new fender, door, and hood fitted by tomorrow or the next day so I can make sure they fit like I want.  After that they'll pull the hood, doors, fenders and bed off for body work and paint.

Thanks Dragon, I bought the wiper stuff from classic parts.   It's not listed as NOS, but both parts came in a GM box.

http://www.classicparts.com/1978-83-Windshield-Wiper-Delay-Control-Module/productinfo/67-682/

I also bought the small tailgate band for my truck yesterday off ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching&viewitem=&item=310083378340&_trksid=p3907.m32

I'm going to strip the old paint off of it and repaint the stripe and chevrolet letters and polish it up.  I'm thinking of painting the perimeter stripe black like it should be, but painting the chevrolet letters a dark charcoal color like my grille and headlight doors are painted.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm slowly getting everything ready for the truck when it comes back.  Tomorrow my sem dyes should be here and I'll be dyeing my door panels, kick panels, and console back like new.  I'm going to leave the dash alone since it's in great shape.  The chrome was wearing off of the door panel trim so I painted them silver. I'll get pics of the dyed stuff when it's good and dry.

Here's a pic of my finished vent windows and original headlight buckets, repainted to match the grille.

I got the new bezel with the aluminum inserts; I also got it for the right side part of the dash
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t195/wes2880/78%20C20%20Rebuild%20Stuff/new%20parts/GEDC0009-1.jpg)

My new carpet showed up.  I have matching floor mats, and got some extra to do the back of the cab behind the seats and the kick panels (I like that better than the full kick panel covers.)

I also got the AC Controls cleaned up and polished.  Behind the clear part there was a piece of black paper or something that had shriveled up and you could see the wrinkles plain as day.  I just cleaned up the clear part and painted black paint right on the back of it.  Now it looks like an actual piece of black glass.  I really liked how it came out except i got a couple of smudges in the white letters, but I can live with it.

Also have the cluster all cleaned up.  It was dusty and had a film of something in it so I cleaned it and it came out great.  Even the pointers look good and aren't faded.\

Yeah all the windows will be 35%.  I have the back window done, I just have to wait on a new LH Window.  The one I have is all scratched from when the sill seals went bad.

Here's some pics of the interior stuff I painted.  I used SEM brand "Firethorn Red."

I set the two trim pieces in the door panel to see what it looks like.  The outer band is painted silver and the inner one is still chrome.

Here's the console and kick panels.  I still have to paint inside the cupholder part black.

Thanks!  the patience is holding well, I haven't done a vehicle like this in about 10 years so 'm having fun with it, except that I can't drive it right now ;D.

Painted up the dash pad.  It wasn't damaged but it had a few stains on it and was way brighter than everything else, so now it matches.

Looks awesome. Detail is the key. I have done this type of thing for year, but always on someone elses truck or car. never can seem to find the time, or money do do my own!
That body shop looks top notch. One thing though, you would think for the kind of work they do they would know the difference from a 55 to a 57 Chevy!!!!

LOL Yeah that is funny for sure, but it was either titled by whoever runs the site for them wrong, or it was just plain fat fingered(ie finger too big, and thought they were pushing one button, over the one that actually got push)...  Although you would be surprised at how many Local "Car Buff" Nimrod's make the same mistake ::)

So just out of curiosity, how Flammable would you say fresh paint is ???

Yeah that's what I was thinkin, Dragon, maybe the site designer messed it up.  I do see people mistake shoebox years too, most common I see is messing up a 55 and 56.  Probably is cigarette smoke in the pic, they all smoke up there.  I be getting some more pics this week, it's supposed to be having all the rest of the body work done and probably paint this week too.  Thanks for the comments guys!

Started stripping the back bumper today.  The cultivator on the tractor makes a good bench to clamp it to for sanding.

Yeah, it'll be the same color, I just wanted to get the 5 or 6 layers of paint off of it, and it had many knicks and chips in the paint that stick out like a sore thumb.  When I painted it, I basically just scuffed and shot it last time. This time I'm putting the work in.

Man your going to have that thing covered end to end. By the time your done your really going to have to put some high dollar insurance on it. Oh and nice to see the safety goggles most people take the safety for granted and those wire wheels your using spit little wires out and stick you like acupuncture.
Title: Re: Damage Repair, 1978 C20
Post by: 78 Chevyrado on September 29, 2008, 10:28:49 PM
Yeah I always wear my glasses.  It sucks having to dig something out of your own eye, especially when you're short an eye because one of them has trash in it. :o  I figured out just how many of those wires break off when I used a wire wheel on something near my old '77.  It happened to rain that night and all the little pieces of wire that were all over the hood and roof (I found them 2 days later) rusted and I had a hundred little rust stains on the paint to remove.  Might not have been so bad except the truck was bright white... ;D  The tractor does look funny with the bumper clamped to it.  Not too many tractors have a step bumper.  As far as the insurance, that's the first thing I have to do when I get it done.

Here's a pic of how my new carpet matches up to the "paint" I used on my plastic/vinyl parts.  Pictured is the LH Kickpanel which is Painted with SEM "Firethorn Red" And the carpet piece is ACC CARPET "835-Firethorn Plush Cut Pile"

Here's also a pic of my console's cardboard liner bonding to a piece of the new carpet. The old felt liner was nasty and dingy so I''m going to line it with matching carpet on the inside.  I peeled the felt off the liner and will replace it by glueing the carpet to the cardboard, and then reassemble it like it was.

Here's pics of relining the console.

Start by peeling the old felt lining off of the carboard backing (not pictured.)  Then I attatched the carpet (before cutting) to the cardboard with contact cement.  After the cement setup i trimmed the carpet with an exacto knife to fit the cardboard exactly.  Then just reassembled it like it came apart; with staples.  I used a leather hammer on the inside and a dolly under the staples to compress them for the tightest hold.

In the first pic below:  You can get the tabs to stand up like below by folding them over and hitting them with a soft hammer to set the crease in the carpet.  If the cardboard tears a bit along the seams that's okay.  The new carpet will hold it together assuming the cement was applied correctly.

It only took about 30 minutes or so to do, minus drying time for the contact cement.  I think it came out great.  And now I don't have to clean the old felt :)

Capt did a proper write up on my console and it's here:

Thanks guys!  No problem about the write up, it looks great.  Anything you think you can use, here it is.

Here's some bodyshop pics for yall.

These two show how the new hood lines up with the new RH Fender and OE LH Fender.  The right side gap needs a little work to just close it up a bit but I'm happy otherwise.  The left gap looks good like it is.

The new fender hood and door go good together.  The filler at the bottom of the door wasn't because of fit, the door just had a couple of dents in it.

It's good to know that somebody out there is making some quality restoration sheetmetal for our trucks since the original stuff is getting both scarce and expensive! Looks like they are making some really good progress on your truck. That rocker panel looks like it fits really good with the door and fender from what I can see. I'm glad that I'm not the one that has to straighten the bedside. Being bent right up there on the front edge like that it most likely won't be any fun to work back out, but those guys seem to do first class work so it shouldn't be any problem for them. Keep the pics coming! I am really enjoying seeing the progress that they are making! ...Joe

Hey 78, what Aluminum is that, and I take it that you sprayed it out of a Gun rather than a rattle can???  Looking for one that doesn't chalk up or rub off any any surfaces(Used a similar Aluminum Spray Can before, but it would always rub off onto your hands, clothing and etc, no matter how dry it was supposed to be)....
Title: Re: Damage Repair, 1978 C20
Post by: 78 Chevyrado on October 03, 2008, 03:28:07 PM
It's from a spraycan.

Here's a link: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=95 (http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=95)

I use this paint for everything I do for exterior.  I did my vent windows with it, and the bumper.  It dries smooth and slick and a little bit rubs off after it's dry, but wait till the next day and polish and wax it and it's good to go.  Also there will be a little bit of splochiness right after painting, but the polish and wax made mine disappear completely.
Plus this stuff is tuff.  You can handle it in an hour or two, but after 48 hours, it sets up all the way and is super tough.  I'd say it's somewhere between powder coating and normal paint, as far as toughness goes.

It's exciting, and It's getting to the end so I'm stressing a bit that nothing gets missed.  So far everything's going well, but you know how it is, I'll be worried about it until its all done but it's not bad.  I'm ready to drive it already, I haven't driven it in 3 or 4 weeks and I miss it.

Here's todays progress, they got the trim off the drivers fender and I helped them take the bed off.  They're feathering everything out for primer tonight or tomorrow.  The frame's dirty but there's barely any rust (except the leaf springs) so I'm going to leave it alone since it's just a driver.  I also got the fuel lines changed out at the tank since I can get to them really easy now the beds gone.

It's starting to pick up a lot now.  Almost there!

Here's todays pics. They have the first coat of epoxy primer on all the bare metal where they did body work.  It's been raining a lot here so they got it covered so it won't start rusting.

My console doesn't have a liner in it.  How hard do you think it'd be to line the console without that as a guide?
Title: Re: Damage Repair, 1978 C20
Post by: 78 Chevyrado on October 12, 2008, 12:13:48 PM
It'll be a little harder.  I'd line the sides of the console with carpet using contact cement (permanent), and then cut a seperate piece for the bottom and attach it with velcro so you can remove the bottom easily to get to the bolts that attach the console to the truck.  If you cut the piece for the bottom a little bit too big, it should appear pretty seamless when you push it tightly into place.  Or also you could leave the side carpet up a bit from the bottom edge of the console so the bottom piece will slide up under it a bit.

If you can find a liner in the junkyard it shouldn't cost more than a couple of dollars.  If you have an original liner, it goes like a breeze.  I think I finished my liner in 30-40 minutes minus drying time for the contact cement.

Here's my new (to me) tailgate band I got off of ebay. It's been stripped of all the old paint, cleaned and polished, and then sprayed it with a clearcoat. I'll paint the stripe and letters later. I will paint the perimeter stripe black, but the chevrolet letters will be a gold color that matches the letters on my silverado fender emblems.

Here's how it is now; cleaned up and sprayed with clear:

Great eBay find!  I wish I could get my old band to shine up!  The Never Dull makes the band look great until it dries, then it looks the same as it did before I started...

When you say carpet the sides do you mean put the carpet on cardboard before installing, or not?  The carpet you used looked a lot thicker than what I have.  I got the black carpet you see on speaker boxes and such.  It doesn't have the plastic/wax film on the backing like the ACC-type carpet does.  It's more thin and flexible, but it's oddly hard to cut...  I think because it's got so many fibers holding it together.

Good idea to use Velcro on the bottom of it!

I'd also like to get my seats covered but I've got so much tied up in it now that a seat cover will have to do!

Since it's thin carpet, i would use cardboard on it, otherwise you will see the outlines from where the console was molded and you would see the brackets  through it too.  You might want to get a thicker cardboard to line the bottom since stuff will be sitting on it.  I don't know why but i have too noticed speaker box carpet is really tough ???

I don't have a pic, but my band did look pretty rough when I got it, it was white and splotchy, etc.  If you want your tailgate band to shine up, If the trim paint is okay, leave it.  If it's crappy use acteone to wipe it off.  Polish it up with flitz or peek or something so the metal looks even and then use some etching wheel cleaner (for bare aluminum wheels; it's acid) to get the toughest stuff off.  At this point the aluminum will look kinda chalky/white, but that's okay, the clearcoat will soak in and make it look new (I think is DOES strip the anodizing off, so once you etch it, you have to clearcoat it).  clearcoat it BEFORE you put tape on it to mask for painting the stripe.  If you try to mask it off to paint the stripe first, that tape will stick so well to the freshly etched aluminum that all the adhesive will stay on the metal when you try to pull it off.  So clear coat it first, then in a couple of days mask it to paint the stripe back, and then if you want put another layer of clear over the whole thing.  Once you have cleared it, when you want to clean it for the next coat, use alchol ONLY to wipe it down with.  Oh another thing, I have found clear paints that do and don't come with the mixing ball inside; I only use the ones that rattle, they seem to work MUCH better.  One more thing, when you forst spray it with clear, the clear paint will look milky until it dries; but it will go away and be clear like mine is above.  Try these steps out on a section on the backside of the band to test is out.

I'd love to recover my suburban buckets, but I can't find the front pair w/armrests anywhere.  They only sell full kits including front buckets, second row seat and third row seat which makes them expensive.

You didn't ask the right place.  I can get it for you, but the owner of the company that sets the price is out for 2 weeks.  I left him a voice mail and once he is back I can tell you how much it will be.

;D Awesome!  Let me know about it!    I need the red or burgandy (whichever it is)  set for a highback with armrests out of a '91 suburban.  I will want them, but it may be alittle while, ($$$) but I won't know until the body shop is all payed up.  THANKS!  Do you  know of anyplace that will reweb my seatbelts?  The only two things left on my interior to do is the seats and seatbelts.

Yes, http://www.ssnake-oyl.com/  They are the best for restoring seatbelts, and accordingly, they are not cheap.

Also when spraying the colors over the clear coat on your tail gate trim. After you mask it off use a maroon scuff pad the sand the clear for a mechanical bond of the paint to the clear.

definately...  This is why I don't write many write ups. ;D  Always forget something small, yet extremely important...

My camera quit after I only got one pic today... ::)

Here's a pic of the bed all ready to be painted.

They have both fenders and doors off the truck to paint the insides of them and to partially jamb out the cab/cowl.  They will finish jambing out the cab when the fenders are back on and will paint it at the same time as when they paint inside the cab.  They are also painting the underside of the hood.  Should be all jammed out by tomorrow.

I got my tailgate band all finished except for repainting the brackets that go on the back. I had ordered a new set of fender emblems and I broke one messing with it, so I cleaned up the sun thingy and painted the rim black and filled the back in flush with epoxy so I could stick it with tape on the band.

Here's today's pics. They have the fenders and doors back on permanently. They already shot the hard to get to stuff like the hinges and such while the doors and fenders were off. They now have the cab wet sanded, and today it will at least get the sealer on it, but will likely get the color on it too. They will paint inside the cab, then the rest of the jambs, and then onto the outer cab, doors and fenders.

Here's a shot of the new color on the inside of the fender. It's a bit dirty from wet sanding around it, but it''ll give you an idea.

They're using BASF brand paint, and it's being done in a BC/CC system.  Its got 2 coats of color and 2 coats of clear.

Here's todays progress. Only stuff to paint is the front valance, ashtray, glovebox door and gas caps. Everything's in the sun. They have the cab sanded and buffed and will get to the bed later today.

Thanks guys!

I only have one problem with black.  The work it takes to make it look good if it wasn't a black body to begin with.  The only thing we have that isn't black is my truck, and we bought those cars new so they were easy. ;D.

I think the body shop did really well on this one. They have everything color sanded and buffed and also got the new windshield installed this morning and it looks great. The photos don't do it justice. Tomorrow they should have the tailgate and bed sprayed with bedliner, as well as the bottom half of my toolbox. Then in 2 days I'm supposed to FINALLY get it back! ;D

The next pics I get should be of the truck at home again on friday.

I got that hood off a friend whose truck was stolen before he could use it.  It's originally came from year one.  I had been hunting around for a non cowl hood and this is the only one I could find  I think new it cost 130-150 bucks, but he let me have it for $50.  The box had "cobra king" brand name on it and its from taiwan, but the fit is excellent and it feels just as sturdy as the OE hood.  On another note, my Goodmark door had the same cobra king name on the packaging and it fits excellent too, but the "improved quality fender" I bought was in a goodmark box.    I always liked the 79-80 hoods better because it adds a little extra detail.   The cowl hoods cost like 3x more $$ and I don't think it would fit the style of my truck.

Since goodmark doesn't sell those hoods, maybe the one I got was an older stock item left over from when they did sell them?

Thanks for the Info Kenny and Capt!  I remember Cobra King and preferred their quality when it came to their Aftermarket Parts....  Back when I was in Auto Repair & Refinishing Training, and I still sold Auto Parts, CK was CAPA Certified since their Quality and Fit were up there.....  CAPA is an Aftermarket AutoParts Certification given to Aftermarket Vendors, when their parts are to OEM or Better than OEM in fit and finished quality(Part has all of the proper mounting locations, or may need only slight adjustment, and all of the part's body lines match the Factory Lines)......   It's funny, but Cobra Kings hoods go for about $35-40 US directly through them, but you have Shipping Costs and Other Hassle you have to go through, if you go direct.....   I used to be able to get ahold of their Parts through NORDAN, for slightly above CK's Direct Prices, but NORDAN is since long gone(They were bought out, but can't remember by who).....  The Only other Local Vendor that carries them, is I believe PC, but they start sticking it to you, as soon as CAPA has been anywhere near the Parts Manufacturers Name.... They like to gouge you for 4-5X's the MSRP, and of course they would prefer you go through an AutoBody Shop, or one of their Retailers(They always say they enjoy you dropping by their Location, but they Jack you around when they do) ::)...  You got a Great Deal on that Hood Kenny! Envious for sure! 8)

Hmmm Wasn't aware that Goodmark stopped selling the Flat Hoods, but I guess it makes sense since more are drawn to the Cowls when they see them( Now it would be Kool if the Cowls had that edge detail as an option) ;D.....

So did ya sleep in her last night. Glad to see ya got it back now get busy and put it together we want to see it finished.

It occoured to me, but i move all over when I sleep, so i'd have beaten the whole inside up  ;D  I sat out in a chair and had a six pack and checked it out, planned this, planned that.

I'll be getting pics first opportunity I get.  I'm chomping at the bit to get it outside so i can work on it.  The weather is crappy here and there's not much working room around it in the garage I park it in, so I have to wait till tomorrow.  I did get the drip rails and fender emblems back on it though, and i tackled the big job of assembling the glovebox ::)  dang RAIN! >:(     One thing I think is really cool that it does now is that when you open the hood about a foot, it'll open the rest of the way by itself.  I never knew they would do that.  Guess those GM Hinges paid off, gotta keep them good and lubed... ;D

Did you add the Support Braces to the hinge mounting points???  If not, I would still add them if you can....  But yes keep the hinges well lubed(I would use a good white Lithium or a Waterproof Multipurpose Lube that will last longer than traditional), and Be sure to only close that Bad Boy from the Center(Preferably with Both hands and even pressure)....

Does Look Great Kenny, Got to say though, ya got a Garage, So Get to work already ;D Even with limited work, you can still work inside the Cab and Such(Windows,Mechs, And Etc).... I'm 6'4" 285, and it still looks like I would would have plenty of room to work! :P

It's off of an '08 silverado.  But i don't know how many years they've been using it or if it's a newer color.  I went and looked at new cars and trucks to find the color I wanted and then got one of the color sample brochures from the salesman.

Got you a price today.  $220 + shipping.  I need to know what year model they are and what they came out of.  Pics would be good.

Thanks for checking for me!  It will be a bit before I can get them since some stuff popped up I need the money for, but I will be getting them before too long.  I'll let you know.

The seats came out of a 1991 suburban.

Here's some progress...  didn't get too much done, but here ya go.

Got the tailgate trim on there:

I got the sound deadener installed inside the doors and cab corners as far up as I could reach. I'm truly impressed with the difference that stuff makes. I used elemental designs v.1 I think it's called. Works great, we'll see how well it holds up over time.
Here's inside the door, that thing is the window bumper in the bottom of the door.

Might I ask how hard it was to install the speed nuts with the fenders on? I have been putting off this step of my rebuild a) because I have plenty of other things to finish, and b) because it looks imposible to reach.

On each fender there is only one hole at the back you can't reach from the inside.  I bought some extra "sticky clips"  like they use on the upper bedsides, and put two on either side of the hole I couldn't reach.  I left the pin on the trim solely as an "alignment pin."  and just "stuck on" that one spot.  The rest of the holes aren't too bad, except the access holes in the inner fender don't line up very well with the mounting holes in the skin.  Just a little PITA but not bad.

I'm lovin it!

here's some progress today

I got the doors wired up for the speakers and the keyless entry stuff.

Here's the door jamb loom I bought.  I had the holes drilled in the same spot the stock loom goes for power window trucks.  They had to be drilled when the fenders and doors were off the truck.

Here's where the wires come out of the A-pillar.  I cut a quarter out of the grommet attached to the courtesy light switch wire and ran them together.  The loom on the wires is to keep the wires from touching the metal hole.

I found these in the garage last night and stuck them on the truck but havent wired them up.  I Had them about a year but forgot about them. I bought them for the golf cart but never used them.  What do yall think?

Looks Amazing Kenny :o One suggestion though, the plastic loom will vibrate around on the sheetmetal, and it will eventually cut through the loom....  As big as that hole looks, I would take some Carb Small Diameter Vacuum Hose, trim to go around the area, and then slice the hose open with a Razor Blade(Please Be Careful With the Razor Blade :-X)....  After you have opened the hose, slip it over the edge of the sheetmetal(To Help Keep it in place, use either rubber contact cement, or even Weather Stripping Glue)... ;)

I second Novadiecast's Suggestion of Ditching the new Fogs/Driving Lamps....  If you must have some, either mount some K.C. Lites to the Top of the Bumper, or some smaller ones in the Bumper...  If you would prefer not to drill holes in the new bumper, I would suggest a "Stealth" Mounting for your current Lights, then how about mounting them Behind your Grille ???

Good idea dragon, worked good, i cut the hose like you said and now I feel better about it.  ;D

I'll probably just ditch the lights all together.  They look too small and really don't fit the truck, after looking at them for a few days now.  I want to get some like these, my old hellas i had on my 77.  I like the some of the retro stuff and would put a light bar on it like the one below if I had the money.

Here's a little progress  got the bumper back on it, and put the first bit of carpet in it.

It's not picture perfect, but here's the plate I made for the 4x10 center dash opening; I'll have 3.5's in the dash, 6x9's in the doors and 6.5's behind the seats.

It's lookin' great!

You might be gonna do it anyway, but if not you might consider puttin' some of that dynomat-type stuff on your cab floor before you put in the carpet.  I am absolutely AMAZED at the quietness of my truck after puttin' that stuff in.  Even with the top off the K5, I can't hardly hear my engine runnin'.  Words can't describe how quiet it is.

I got a bit on the floor but ran out so I'm waiting on some more to show up.  I'm still in awe at how my doors sound now.  It doesn't sound like I dropped a coffee can when I shut the doors!  I did inside both doors; on the outer skin and the inner framework, up and down the rear cab pillars as far as i could reach, and will finish the floor hopefully soon.

Here's today's progress

Here's the speaker plate, in the dash:

This is what I used on mine -- I picked it up for $15 a roll at Home Depot.  It took me 3 rolls to do the K5, that's the doors, floors & rear wheel wells.   I put it down then used aluminum tape on the seams.  I put down POR 15 first just because I wasn't sure if I could get this stuff back up after putting it down!

I wonder if there's REALLY any difference in this stuff and Dynomat (or other similar brands)?

I just can't hardly believe it's as quiet as it is.  Stuff should be a requirement.

Post by: 78 Chevyrado on November 03, 2008, 10:20:20 AM
That's a good bit cheaper than what I got, though mine wasn't as much as dynomat.  I got mine from elemental designs for around $1 a sq.ft  whereas dynomat and a couple of others go for around $2-$3 per sq.ft  I don't think there's much difference in the brands, I just go for the one that's really sticky so it won't come off later.  Anything will help....  a lot.

Been watching this and............................WOW!!!!!!!! is all I can say. I envy the way yours is set up. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing? I'm not sure if someone already asked this, but what is the PPG ColorCode for that paint? And, are those wheels a direct bolt-on or would I have to modify anything for them? BTW, neat idea for the stock speaker hole and sound deadener.

Thanks
Benjamin.

sweet, I wanted some for my 81 3/4 ton but was told the bolt pattern was different on the Hummers than the other 8 lugs. Didnt make any sense to me, but I did have time to measure  the pattern, so I passed it up.

I'm not sure about the ppg code, I'll have to find out.  What they said about the wheels... 8)

got the carpet in it and the RH door panel on.  Can't put on the LH panel yet, the aftermarket regulator i bought is crap and already rough working.  I want a GM one but the dealer wants $110 for it, so I'm hunting around for a better deal.  Can you get them Capt?

on to the pics...

In the last pic, look at the armrest.  There were a few good spots in the felt that i stripped out of my console, so I kept two pieces and cut them to go in the armrests and attatched them with a bit of contact cement.

Yes, manual, LH Side.  I got it from classic parts of america.  they're hard to operate (even out of the door) and when the window is about halfway up it gets really hard to crank then gets easier at the top.  I slid the window up and down the channel without the regulator and it works fine without it.  I greased it with white lithium greas before installation.  I thought maybe it was new and would wear-in, but i don't think that's what it's doing. :o  I reused the original regulator in the passenger side since it was in great shape and didn't get much use over the years.  so I'm thinking it's just not as heavy as the originals, and since it will get most of the use, I'd just go with a GM part.  I don't know yet if they will take it back or what, but either way I don't want to have to do a regulator again for a while, since it's a PITA trying to be careful of the new paint (even with masking tape there for safety).  I just checked at the dealer first since I had to go get a throttle cable for the truck.  The GM PN# is supposed to be 14027431.

I checked on gmpartsdirect and they have it for $81+shipping.

Yeah the majority of the Aftermarket Regulators that I have used in my projects, or replaced in other friends/family member cars/trucks/mini-vans were pretty much mass produced Chinese/Taiwanese Junk....  What I've had to do in the past, is literally tear them apart, and rework them, to get them to move right......   It sounds like in your case, the lithium grease was a God idea, but it almost sounds like either it is binding half-way into the crank stroke, from either a pinch/ bend in the mech, or some of your gear teeth needs to be filed.....

I would start off by checking the Sash Channel at the base of the glass that the rollers slide around in, and make sure it isn't obstructed, or bent in any way......   If the Shash Channel is clear, and the rollers slide in it freely, then I would suggest checking the gear teeth, to make sure that they are allowing the proper movements......

All aftermarket stuff is overseas, it sounds like it..  nevermind I see Dragon replied.

If parts direct can get it, I can also.  That is a good price on it though.  What was wrong with your original one?

Sorry Capt! :-X  The only thing I will complain about Partsdirect, is that they will stick it to you on shipping costs..... They make up for it, so long as you got more than one item, or a really large one!!!  I used to try to get misc. trim fasteners and such from them, cause alot of other places didn't have the parts available, but $0.98 for a small trim piece, and $5-20 to ship it is ridiculous! :o Now if I bought those pieces in bulk, the shipping would still be around the same, and I could always sell off my left overs..... ;)  Just trying to say that PartsDirect can sometimes be too good to be true, if your not buyng enough to make it worth your while.....

Here's the truck all finished now (maybe not finished, but to a good stopping point ;D).  It's Code 16U "Graystone Metallic" off of an '08 Silverado.  The Wheels are off of an '01 silverado.  350sb/TH400, 14bolt FF 3.73 rear end

Here's my build thread: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=9090.0 (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=9090.0)

Here's an album with pics of all the trucks different stages since I first got it.  There's a heck of a difference from the first and last pic. :o

I definetly want to get some spacers, but first I need to get some seat covers, and do something with my seatbelts but have to save up for them now.  The seats did look fine, but now they look like crap since the whole interior is like new.

Kenny,
Are those side body molding repo's and if so did you have any problems with them fitting right? They look good in the pics. Nice truck.

All the mouldings are  new repo's EXCEPT the front and rear lower bedside pieces on both sides. I was able to reuse my old pieces (they didnt get much wear at all).  The front and rear lower bedside pieces ranged from 1/4" to a 1/2" too long between the 4 pieces.  The fender pieces fit well, the door pieces were a tad short like a 1/16" or something.  The upper bedside pieces were a bit long, but that made them fit a little bit nicer than the OE stuff did. The tailgate pieces were a bit shorter then the OE stuff, which was too short to begin with, but they still look good.  The 4 small pieces on the cab behind the door fit like OE.  The main problem with the kit was the fasteners.  It was kinda like pot luck.  an exampe is that between the 4 door pieces, where they attach at the rear, I had 3 different kinds of fasteners.  Also the screws that go in from the outside through the black stripe aren't black, and half of them were wrong I got 4 different types of screws (bought some at the parts store that were even painted black).  On the double sided taped  parts, the tape used was pot luck again.  Lots of different thicknesses and the tape really is crap.  Some of them are coming off already,  and the few I've fixed so far with good 3M tape haven't given me any problems yet.  So as enough of the sticky tabs let go for me to easily get the part off, I'll replace the tape on them.  The trim itself looks good though.  Just make sure to keep the old fasteners off of the old trim or you'll regret it big time.  I had no problems with the wheel opening trim, good stuff.   Most of the exterior screw holes (the ones for the black screws in the black stripe) like at the front of the door and especially where the bedsides meet the tailgate had to be redrilled strictly because the OE trim lined up pretty poorly to begin with. but no prob just an adjustment, the trim still covered the old holes of which some were off "up/down" by a 1/4" or less.

wow, that is one cleaaaaan truck...im totally jealous...neither my 73 or my 77 are that clean....i always loved the fact that you could take a classic car/truck and completly redo every little thing and make it look brand new again...gives me hope since i dont like 90+ anything as far as vehicles go...there is no character and style to cars and trucks anymore imo...

where did you get that dash bezel with the HU port where the stock stereo goes?...haha i recently rigged mine in my 77...right now my HU is sitting in my glovebox haha...id like to make it legit sometime soon, do they sell a kit? or did you completely fab all that?...i know in my 77 the metal behind that plastic bezel isnt wide enough for a aftermarket HU...so im assuming ill have to cut a little to make it fit right...

I bought the   bezel with the holes for the knob radio like stock and modified it.  I love cutting new stuff ;D  I didn't buy any kit and you shouldn't need anything that doesnt come with the radio unless your dash is all hacked up and you want to cover it up.  You'll have to cut the bezel and the metal dash behind it.

First make the hole in the bezel only, and then install the bezel and mark the metal dash for cutting.  Be sure to screw the bezel down because that makes a difference.

The DIN hole for the new radio won't take up the entire hole the old radio used, so just as long as the trim ring will cover the top of the old hole, you can leave a slot at the bottom, and no one will see it since you always look down at the radio.  I also reused the old radio support bar in the back of the radio.  I had to twist it 90 degrees and without it you'll be able to see the radio bounce over bumps.  The sleeve has to go in last thing, and then just bend over a few tabs to the plastic bezel to keep it tight, but bend them all you can behind the metal dash since that does the real holding.

Notice in the 2nd pic, where the bezel meets the trim ring in the lower right corner; dont try to make the bezel fit the trim ring, instead sand or file the trim ring to fit the bezel and it will look 100 times better.  You will also have to shave the corner off of the radio mounting sleeve for this spot too.

awesome, that helped a lot...but what is the "mounting sleeve" you're refering to?...like the plastic kits that you can buy for different makes and models of cars??...or is it something simple im overlooking?...i have my HU brand new in the box...so if it comes with a HU stock, i should have it...but the cutting and fileing and everything made sense...and the bit about leaving the bottom hole....that made sense too
Title: Re: 1978 Chevy C20

Here's the mounting sleeve to the right of the radio.

New in the box, it's probably on the HU right now.  It slides off and you mount it in the dash, the the radio will slide into it and lock in.  I painted a black band on the front outer, in case installation didn't go just right.  If it's not just right, some of the sleeve could show, and looks much better black instead of gray.

I got my rear speaker boxes built today.  6.5" speakers they will go in the rear cab corner on the floor facing up.

I like them facing up rather that aiming into the side of the seat.  It gives a lot better sound staging without having to set the fader way to the rear.

Nice PK!!!!! Was that thing two tone to start off with? My 79 silverado has about the same color gray with light gray in the middle with maroon interior. When I re do the exterior I was going to paint it all dark gray to match the jams. I was also going to change the interior to gray but after looking at yours I like the trim for two two tone on a single color along with the maroon interior. Again looks great can't wait to dig into mine. But the tired 350 needs to come out first and transformed to a 383.

Yeah mine came with the trim and wasn't a two tone.  I like my red interior, it's not as plain as the grey/tan/black you can get on the newer vehicles.
I was hoping to tackle the drivetrain first before bodywork/paint but the wreck said otherwise.  I'll be soon getting a new tranny and maybe after that a new engine, guess i'll have to be careful of the new paint... :-\

beautiful truck! i love the look of the ride height difference.
i had a 80 2500 that had only 164k and a muncie 4 on the floor, the ending to that one was somebody turning right from my left lane and cutting me off, the best part is the police report showed it being his fault however being 21 is also a crime because they deemed it equal liability and the guy never even knew i was there!!
This time i'll start with a 86 c20 with 152k, unfortunately its the th400 auto :( but she is a dang fine shape for what i paid.

They fit good.  the aluminum pieces look a little flashier and nicer, but after getting in and out 10 or 15 times they get all skint up and look crappy.  Also after a while they'll tarnish for lack of a better word.  the black ones stay just like they are forever.  they don't show up all the scratches from feet dragging across them.

Got some pics last week after I cleaned the truck up real good.  I also took off the toolbox and it will stay off until I need it again.  I like how it looks better without it.  I had not seen it without the toolbox yet since it had it on there when I got it back from the body shop.

What lugnuts did you use to mount the new style wheels on your truck? Did you have to change the wheel studs? I have 1998 gmc 8 lug center caps on some old chrome modular wheels on my 1976 3/4 ton truck.  I just re-tapped two wheel studs to mount the caps, but I dont want to do all of them for fear of them not being strong enough.  By the way, your truck looks good.

They sell the 9/16 lugnut with the outer thread for the center cap.  I got mine on ebay but not sure the name of the store.  Someone here will know where to get them.  They were not cheap thought.  I think the set cost me close to 50.00

Here's an old school artistic shot.  It must be because it's a large framed picture in my granddad's man cave.   It was taken on a trip to Wyoming in 1980.  My truck's at the top right with the big camper shell on the back.   I just took this pic, because I never noticed the truck was in it before....

I added some more cup holders to my console.   I bought the little cup holder your supposed to wedge between the seat and console of a car.  I trimmed the top rear edge to fit the console properly, it came straight.

I'm loving it, gotta have my cubby holes.   It's bolted on with 4 small bolts so its strong and tight with huge fountain drinks in it.  Doesn't look great from the bottom but you never see anything except the top anyway unless you lay on the floor.  Total cost is about $5.  It also keeps stuff set in the floor in the middle from going under the console which is handy since i hate hunting under stuff.

Another Impulse buy today that I'm quite happy with...

I got the driving lights wired up today.  I have them aimed to do some good and they only come on with the high beams.

I like em, I like em a lot.  They look so much better than my headlights, I think it's time to buy some of those hella 7" replacements.

Kept the visible new wiring to a minimum.  These 2 short runs are all that's visible.  I used the stock looms for the rest.

And found a decent set of window handles.  As far as I can tell, unless you find genuine GM parts, ALL the correct type handles suck in every way they can.
These Are Dorman PN# 76912.  They are metal and the knob doesn't rattle all around.  they also fit the handle washer well.

I got some E-fans for the old truck today.  They're Flex-A-Lite #295.  It's the full kit, everything included, variable speed.  I'm still dialing it in, but they will definitely over cool it, so I'm good.  Just have to drive it and readjust it for a couple of days.  They pull the air Real good, Way more than the Old fan did even when the clutch stuck.  It'll suck in cigarette smoke into the grille from about 2.5 feet away.  I also can notice a LITTLE more pickup with the engine.  It's just enough to tell a difference.  I like that the clutch fan isn't there anymore sapping power for the first few minutes its running after being cold.

All the parts Appear to be High quality.  We'll see how well it holds up.

All I have left to do is reroute the upper radiator hose.  the stocker interferes with the fan blades, and I've twisted it on the nipples to try to adjust it and it's just not gonna work AND look good.  I'm going to dig through the pile of hoses at the parts stors and see if I can find one I like, and I think I'll make a support bracket for the hose that attaches to the A/C compressor bracket.

Looks great! I was eyeing that fan for awhile, but found some a little cheaper. You take detailed pics of your bracketry?

Thanks Guys!

Beastie:   HEre's the best pics I have of the brackets.

Here's the top.  It's simply a piece of angle aluminum bolted to the fan shroud and then tucked behind the upper radiator panel and bolted to that.  I had to bolt it together out of the truck, so when I remove the fans, that upper radiator panel comes out with it.  I don't know what size the angle is, as it was a piece I had lying around the garage.  The only thing I had to go out and buy was the bolts for the water pump pulley.1
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t195/wes2880/78%20C20%20-After%20New%20Wheels/E-Fans/GEDC0022.jpg)

Here's the bottom.  I made this up out of the brackets that came with the fans.  At the top of the bracket is the bottom-center of the fan shroud and the L-shaped pieces at the bottom are under the radiator support.  I drilled two holes for those bolts, then you have to lift up the radiator a bit to get them in.  Once its all together you can still get a wrench in there to the bolt heads for tightening.

To remove it, you unbolt the L-shaped brackets from the core support, then from the big bracket and then take out the 4 or 5 bolts across the upper radiator support panel and it all comes out as one big piece.

I will eventually paint the brackets black to match the underhood black paint, but I'm not doing that until the engine is out for replacement.  I might paint the top panel and shroud in black crinkle paint.  It seems to be working really well so far.  The only thing I still need to do is put a seal in front of the radiator to the core support, as there's about a 3/4" gap up both sides that sucks hot underhood air in.  At a redlight with both windows down, I can just hear them when they come on.

That's where the extra power comes from, they're not actually cooling fans, they're thrusters... ;D

I got the E-fans all buttoned up.   I had to get a different radiator hose - I got the one for a NON-AC truck.  And on top of the AC compressor, I mounted an old alternator bracket upside down to support the hose and keep it out of the AC belt.  I also bought the Flex-a-lite screw in temp sensor instead of using the temp probe in the radiator fins.  I like the sender in the head better, the temp doesn't fluctuate near as much as with the radiator probe.

Did you get the wrong hose by mistake and just adapt it? Or would the correct one touch the blades?

Mt Dew isnt supposed to be used for coolant, even if it is the same color! (2nd pic)

I opted for the block sensor too, I wouldnt trust the probe, but I put mine in the intake, right before the water goes into the radiator. Just like a transmission temp, I like to know what the hottest temp is because that is all that matters.

My old hose; The correct hose (molded and curved) was in the new fan blades real bad.  I had to tie it to the master cylinder until i got the new hose.  It just used to lay on the OE fan shroud.  The molded upper hose like i had is for A/C trucks, the new one I have now is for NON-A/C trucks.  I kept the correct molded hose on the lower, no need to change that one.

It took a heck of a lot of those lil dew bottles to fill that thing up!   ;)

I still have the stock intake manifold, so It didnt have any places to screw in a temp sensor.

I got my new Alternator Installed today.  CS130D Direct Fit 180A.

http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=122 (http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=122)

They shipped it out fast, and have great customer service so far!

When I opened the alternator, the sticker on said 24 volts, but all the paperwork and the test sheet said 12v so I called them up.  they picked up on the 2nd ring, and the first guy transfereed me over to the man who packed it up for me, and he picked up in 10 seconds or so, and I told them what model I had, all info and they got another one off the shelf, and it also said 24V.  so they tested that one on the machine right then to make sure it was 12 volts and it was.  turned out to be a typo on the label, but the model and serial info was fine.  turns out there wasnt even a problem, but they took care of it QUICK!.  i was off the phone in 5 minutes.

On to the good stuff.

Here's what came in the box.  It came with one pigtail and one adapter, depending on how you want it hooked up.  The adapter makes it so you dont have to modify the trucks harness.  it adapts the old connector to the new one.

Here's a comparison of The old 10si 140A and the CS130D 180A.   The pigtail coming off the new one is the adapter.  I just had it in there for some reason.  The chargine wire stud on the new alt. is bigger than stock, so you'll need to swap terminals on your charge wire.  they had a new terminal included, but it was too small, it fit the smaller stud on the old alt.  thats the only screw up I've found, but i have lots of terminals so its no biggie for me.

Here's how the wiring ended up looking.  I used the adapter but spliced it into my trucks wiring harness.  I didnt have to modify the truck, but it looks much better, and using the old connection lets in water anyway.

A close up of the finished product with the new 86-87 Pulleys Screamin86 Hooked me up with.  I didnt have to swap pulleys on the alternator, as I ordered it with a 6-groove serp. pulley, and my pulleys are 5 groove so it fits correctly, i just have a groove left over on the alternator.

So far, so good.  puts out 14.20v normally and with everything running and at idle in drive it runs about 13.9v.  I do have to say though I have my idle lower than normal though.  its about 500RPM in drive.

I also notice the gauge doesnt move around anymore.  when I started it cold it went up to where it should be and didnt go way past it, like the old one did.  once It running, basically the gauge stays right where it should, 14.1v to 14.2v.  And its quieter than the old alt too.  might be the internal fan.

EDIT: Found once the truck had warmed up good and the idle settled, the gauge dipped some at redlights, checked it and its at about 13.2v there.  So I have a smaller pulley on the way.  Then it'll be all good.

Everything I did to swap the crank and water pump pulleys to the 5-groove ones is here:

I ordered my new steering wheel today.  I got sick and tired of the horn button popping off my standard oem wheel.  if i don't hit it in the center it pops off.  plus more of the tabs are broken again.  I've replaced the back of the horn button 4 times now.  Sooo....  time for an update!

I also ordered a set of smoked vent shades for the side windows.  Not the chrome kind (old skool) that screwed on, but the bigger type that goes from the bottom front of the vent window to the back of the big side window.  all held on with double sided tape.  I like the chrome ones better looks-wise but i had them on my 77 and where the screws were made a big-time rust problem.  I'm a smoker, so They will help me out.  Pics to come on this too after I have the truck washed.

Hopefully next item i buy is a tonneau cover...

I'm liking the new wheel a lot.  I like the thicker grip much better and the horn button doesn't fall off.  Woohoo!

The ventshades are taking a little getting used to though even though I do like them.  They cut the wind noise to almost zero.  and my vent seals are good and don't whistle anyway!

I ordered my new tonneau cover today.  I'm starting to take a lot more road trips, hence the latest upgrades like the steering wheel, vent visors and tonneau.  I just need a place to keep what I take with me dry.  I always seem to go south and get caught in torrential downpours...lol  and the tonneau is about $90 less than another toolbox.  plus if somethings really big or would skin my bed up, I use the trailer anyway.

I bought the extang 14535 with the J45 (ziplock) attatchment.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EXG-14535/ (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EXG-14535/)

and these stake pocket caps
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-8794/ (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-8794/)

I only bought four caps as the rear ones don't let water into the bed, only the front four do.

The steering wheel was from me to me on my bday, but today IS my bday so I had to buy something else...ha!

New Tonneau is Installed.  EXTANG 14535.  Looks Great and fits good.

My review:  The cover is high quality, all parts fit together easily and properly.  The way it came, it covered the stake pocket holes completely EXCEPT for about a 1/16" to 1/8" gap in the front two pockets.  I planned for this though and bought these Stake Pocket Caps:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-8794 (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-8794)
They are black Plastic, Fit Perfectly, Look High quality.

I put the stake pocket caps in the front 4 holes (LWB= 6 Stake Pockets)  (SWB= 4 Stake Pockets)  I have a LWB.  Bought the four pocket cap kit (as the rear pockets by the tailgate don't let water into the bed compartment)  I only truly needed four of them.

Onto the pics!  I like it I have a bigger trunk than any year Cadillac and this tonneau cost less than another toolbox!

Truck is still dirty as I havent washed it since my trip and got arm prints on it from installing the bed cover.  :)

I like it a lot, being new though the whole truck smells like new vinyl when you walk up to it...lol  but thats okay, makes the whole thing same new.

Whoever noticed the new dents on the drivers side rear of the bed, well I found those in the home depot parking lot one day....  Won't come out without paint, so at a minimum it won't be fixed till my rockers get chiped up enough to warrant more paint.  then we'll see.  8)

The cover did exactly what I wanted it to though, It covered the stake pockets and it covers/hides the holes left from my toolbox.

I got rid of the toolbox.  It wouldn't work with this tonneau, as the front end by the cab doesnt peel back like the sides and rear do.

I've got a couple of surplus army boxes for ammunition I'm thinking about bolting down in the back by the tailgate for my tools.  They'll be out of the weather are metal, and can be locked.

Nice!  I really got to appreciate the new wheel on my long trip.  I like the thicker hand grip and the leather is so nice.  when it gets hot it doesn't scald the hands like the old wheel did, and it shouldn't suck the heat out of my hands in the winter time either.

Not sold on the fog lamps without a surrounding air dam, however everything else on that beast is perfect imo.

I love em!  It's a little taste of my first truck, and when I turn on the hi-beams going 75MPH on the freeway, it's nice when the sun comes out...   8)

A later on project is to get a stock airdam on it, (hopefully to help some with mileage.)

Thank you for the kind words.  I spent 15 years (since I could drive) wishing for the same thing.  I hope you can get yours nice before 15 years.  It took forever, but I'm in a good place today.  and I have the last years of NOT HAVING to thank for that.  You'll get yours fixed up if you work for it. Lots of work, but way worth the payment...  (As in no more work, and driving around and getting complimented constantly.  I end up talking to car guys who like my truck at least 20 mins a week)   ;D 8)

I had the day off today and went to see Grandad... He put it better than I ever could have about the truck... He said "That was the last truck I ever worked out of and it's the first you ever worked out of" (you is me)

He's right... all other jobs I've had until now all i had to bring was a full toolbelt.. I now run my own stuff in my own truck.... I teared up a good bit over that statement.

I've already decided... even if it makes the truck get dents and scrathces, I'm gonna work it's ass off. For him, BECAUSE HE SURE WOULD DO IT TO IT.

I told him I'm glad it's a 3/4 ton as my old 1/2 ton would be dragging ass hauling what I haul daily... He said "What did you expect?" He tells you how it is, period....

I printed this out for him to see what I'm doing lately. This is about 1/2 of my tools loaded up...

Stuff I left out....

Here's how my truck made it through the ADAIRSVILLE, GA tornado in early 2012.
There's some cussing.  but I just lived through a tornado and didn't die and my truck was untouched in any way, so I deserve to let the cussing slide.

1st    the first run by.  I had taken everything of survival value out of my C20, and patted and kissed the dash and told my truck goodbye...  I said goodby and expected to never see it again.  I literally petted the dash on the passenger side and kissed the dash goodbye...  literally.  It felt like leaving a good dog outside to the storm...
http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_124730_zps088d90d1.mp4.html (http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_124730_zps088d90d1.mp4.html)

2nd    this is after the first tornado went by, me and mr brown, came out of a closet in the middle of the house we were working on...
There was one death nearby because of the storm, the fireman you saw running came up and asked me to show him my tablet...  he was 4 blocks off from where the man was trapped.  so I helped them find the one man but too late.
http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_114607_zps216cf90f.mp4.html (http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_114607_zps216cf90f.mp4.html)
The little level I mentioned in the 2nd video...   I had my miter and table and skill saws on the front porch, well when we came back out all those saws were gone forever, but for some inexplicable reason my little cheap plastic torpedo level was still on the window sill....

3rd   this is after the second wave went other...  everything you see that's messed up was in place and as it should be 2 hours sooner.  even the cops and fire dept couldn't get to us.  we were stranded, until the tractors and loggers could come and set us free,
http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_112907_zps514f38cf.mp4.html (http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_112907_zps514f38cf.mp4.html)
We couldn't leave for 5 hours until they had removed enough of the big trees fell over the roads to make it possible.

TRUCK MADE IT SOME HOW!!!!
http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_112809_zps9f635d4f.mp4.html (http://s160.photobucket.com/user/wes2880/media/VID_20130130_112809_zps9f635d4f.mp4.html)

4th   this is the last video.   shows how screwed up everything was around us, but me and my friends explorer didn't even get a scratch on our vehicles.  We were in the center closet in the house with living supplies and I had long ago kissed my truck goodby forever, yet when we emerged, our house, and our trucks were totally untouched.

I'm a heavy smoker, but I couldn't smoke most of the day cuz of the broken gas mains,  I wasn't sparking anything...

we got out later that day, but it went to a head at a creek that overflowed and was 4 ft deep.   I know my truck can't take that except one way...  hit it goin 40mph or so.   so my and mr brown took that creek goin 45mph.  it was like we hit a wall but we made it out and I took him home and then got myself home.   THIS IS TRULY A STORY WHERE MY TRUCK SOMEHOW SURVIVED THE TORNADO AND WAS ONE OF THE FEW VEHICLES AROUND THAT COULD GET PEOPLE OUT OF THE AREA AND GOT US OUT.  I figured my lights under the bumper would have been trashed and I didn't care.   but they even made it though I had to reaim them later.   My truck saved me from lots of ugliness that day.  my car nor van could have done that for me.

So Me n my truck are meant to be.  I'll never get rid of it.  we're the best of teams.   And me and it survived the storm unscathed, tho I was inside in a closet and it was outside unprotected.  I had literally kissed and patted it on the right side if the dash and kissed it goodbye.  but my truck was there waiting for me unscathed when it was all over.  only problem was literally I wouldn't crank it because of the extreme gas leaks everywhere.  they made us sick.

Me and my truck.  my car n van are secondary...   It's me and my 78 C20 against the world.  and apparently we'll kick  doing it.

Lookup Adairsville, ga 2012 tornado.  me n my truck were dead center in it.  all houses on all sides of us got trashed, but our one house and our 2 vehicles got by untouched.  miracle if ever there was one.

worst part of it, besides cowering in a closet multiple times(and you will cower when that sound and rumble goes over ya), was I couldn't smoke my cigs cuz the whole place was one giant gas leak, was scared to even try to crank our cars up.  it was bad enough we all got high off natural gas, was making all of us even the fireman and cops sick..

actually the worst part was, my mom (she watches news all the time and knew where i was) had called me to tell me to take cover and about 15 seconds into the call the phone hung up...  even fm and am radio didn't work...  so worst part was  it scared her so much, and I knew it would soon as I lost phone...  didn't get to talk to her again for 2 hours.  she was all crying and stuff.  I don't like her crying, ever.  so that was the worst other than cowering in a closet with another man...lmao   :)

lol.  just as long as you're not on TV talking about freight trains.

I grew up in the Midwest (Illinois) and have been through a tornado.  not a direct hit but it was too close for me so I understand the cowering.

Those are good. For some good videos you could put it facing the whole rear suspension, in one of the front wheel wells and looking at the engine. Just too see all the movement stuff makes when we drive. Also, I'm always liked your truck, it's really nice! C20 to like mine.

Well i think those videos are just neat, but this is the first time i've ever heard how my truck sounds.  had it since 2008, never heard it like this.  i have heavy sound deadening and i'm always inside the cab.  i got someone to do a few drivebys in my last truck, but nothing like this...

It's Graystone Metallic off of a (new at the time) 2008 silverado.  IIRC its code 16  That was from the dealer paint chip flyer.  It has a good bit of blue in it, and some pearl, on a black sealer.  My paint guy was surprised, a normal no extra cost truck paint at the time had pearl in it.

That's what I thought. I'm familiar with the color, working at Chevy dealer. I've chosen 2014 Brownstone metallic for mine when the time comes.

I really like the color on this truck. :) I have a 1979 4wd that came from the factory with grey paint and a black center. I am going to have it repainted in the color that you used on yours. Every time I see this truck it inspires me to work on mine. I am replacing the cab floor, rockers, kick panels and cab corners.

Headlight Upgrades

A few years ago I put in those Hella Conversion Lenses.  I have the SAE version.

Bought these Philips LED H4 lights to fit the Hella Lenses.  Good cutoff and These two lights are brighter than my old headlights and driving lights were combined.  Driving lights still have ZXE bulbs in them.
