Gas Tank Drop/Sending Unit replacement
« on: September 02, 2008, 12:01:46 AM »
First step is to locate and loosen the fuel filler and vent

Second, if the tank it full siphon the fuel out into a approved fuel container:

Once you get as much of the fuel you can out, get a flat piece of board or steel plate to set under the tank for balance and put slight pressure on the tank:

With the tank supported now remove the bolt holding the tank to the frame.  (don't remove the straps as this is MUCH easier)

With the bolts removed lower the tank down paying attention to the sending unit and its connections, at some point, you will need to support the rear of the tank and let the front sit down (this is where a completely empty tank comes in)

With the tank in this posistion, you can see the sending unit wire, fuel and return line, and vent along with the fuel pump wiring (if it is an EFI truck).  Reach in and remove the hoses and the sending wire and lower the tank to the ground.

With the tank on the ground you can remove the lock ring with a mallet and a screwdriver blade.  With the lock ring removed, you can now pull the sending unit out.  If EFI, you can replace it at this time.

To reinstall, reverse the operation.
