16 gallon to 20 gallon anyone done this?
« on: October 10, 2015, 11:38:38 AM »
I just got my new tank today and there's definitely a good difference. I'm sire I will have to shorten the full and vent lines but is there anything else.

Test fit. ..had to massage the edges near the straps to get the anti-squeek pads in but went good. The pads are actually Hercule that I cut to fit.

Fitment was good so I decided to make it match the rest of the truck well the half I did paint...
It looks like the fill neck and vent will be a simple thing and less parts than the 16 gallon. It is baffled and I any paid $104 shipping included.

I will post a pic of the inside so anyone who's curious can see what the baffels look like. Unlike the old tank which are plastic. This one is metal

So you have a 20 gallon, steel, baffled fuel tank? I'm very interested, where did you get it? Think it will replace my original 20 gallon tank in my long bed?

I sell these also, but you can get them about anywhere.  You just need a 87-91 tank, it will be baffled.

I'd get them from Chris and yes I have LWB but it shouldn't matter. The only thing that they could contact is the front spring hanger. I can measure from the hanger to the fuel door if you are curious.

Chris do you sell the rubber for the fill and vent lines?

Ok, so a 87-91 tank, even tho its for the newer body style fits on the 73-87 body style and I can get them from Chris. If that's right then it sounds great to me.

Also, no need to measure, mines 2wd so no need.

Still want to see pics of the inside tho.

I don't have a vendor for the rubber lines, but I can tell you where to get them: http://classicheartbeat.com/73-91%20rubber_&_weatherstrip.htm
The tanks will swap to any of the years.  SWB trucks can ONLY use 16G tanks.  LWB can use either 16 or 20G.

Here's a look at the inside. Nice deep sump to keep the pump covered.

Ok I'm not sure I understand how the baffles are shaped. Maybe it would make more sense if I saw it as a whole, like the whole tank cut in half long horizontally front to back. Cuz that just looks like a tray sitting on the bottom of tank. Keep in mind I've never seen or handled a tank like that in person, I've only worked with my fuel tank and the newer plastic ones from the late 90's and newer.

I did the opposite of this with my 81, came with one 20gallon tank and I had a spare 16 gallon that I had taken off another truck.
I had to change the filler neck etc but when I went to bolt it up only one side of the supports lined up to the holes in the frame!

It is literally a rectangular bowl with holes in the bottom for when the level is lower then the upper lip of the bowl and to prevent fast draining.
