I'm running a 350 engine in front of my ht350 tranny in my K20/K10 and was wondering if anyone has used an overdrive unit with the HT350? If so how strong are the overdrive units?

Are you talking about an aftermarket Overdrive unit?  The Gear Vendor version is plenty strong, but by the time you buy one, you could swap to a 700R4 for cheaper IMO.

I had a quote to change out my TH350 with a 700r for 1800.00

Yeah, it looks like a crate 700r tranny from a reputable company would cost about the same as an overdrive unit.
