Starter bolts
Cheyenne1010:
I am a proud owner of a 1973 chevy Cheyenne longbed 5.7liter.the problem I'm having is the starter bolts are two different size.one is 3/8 diameter and the other is 1/2 diameter and when I purchase a starter the holes on the starter match up with the smaller diameter 3/8 bolt.thet last starter I bought I had to drill out the 3/8 diameter bolt hole to 1/2 diameter bolt hole.i have never see this before and if you have please explain what is going on and any suggestions on how to fix my issue will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys
Robert
Shifty:
It shouldn't be a 1/2....sounds like someone drilled/tapped your block at some point.
bd:
Someone may have stripped the threads out of the original 3/8" bolt hole then drilled and tapped for 1/2".
Can you post pics of the starter mounting surface of the block with the starter removed and pics of the starter showing the bolt hole layout? Some starters use a straight across bolt hole configuration while others are offset or staggered. Depending on how the block is drilled, you may be able to substitute an alternate style.
Twosquarebodys:
Will a Heli-Coil work??
bd:
No. The 1/2" bolt hole is already larger in diameter than the tap for the 3/8" Helicoil. If the substitute starter suggestion posted previously isn't workable, contact Timesert to see whether they offer a solution.
