Holley Sniper?
« on: March 31, 2023, 10:55:54 AM »
Hey guys, I recently installed a Holley Sniper on the mid 90's vortec 350ci that's in my 1984 Custom Deluxe.
So far so good. I can't really comment much because I now need a transmission. So I haven't been able to put many miles on it.
I didn't post this so you guys could tell me to go back to a carb. I've heard all that.
I posted it to see if anyone has a good experience with the Holley Sniper on their truck?
I did the fuel cell and new lines and everything except the Hyperspark. My install is clean and neat.
It fires right up and is running smooth. Unfortunately I smoked my 700r4 on the maiden voyage.
The cable. I know.
So, post up your Sniper stories?  ;D

I don't know anything about the Sniper kit but sucks about your transmission!  It's amazing how that little TV cable can kill the 700r4 so quick.

I don't have one, but I'd sure like to know more about them and your experience with it.

Don't know anything about the H S, but man is that a clean and well organized motor!

It's F.I. right?

Thanks for the compliment.
Yes, it is electronic fuel injection.

It seems this system can be tempermental.
If things aren't just perfect it's not happy.

If I had a transmission I'd be able to tell you more.  ;D

It looks like a 4 barrel carb.
But, it's not.
This pic is from before I moved my temp sensors around and got black hose clamps for my vacuum stuff.  ;D

Were you the one that had to limp home that overheated and wouldn't shift thru the gears?

Love how you went the distance with the plug wiring at the cap! I'll soon be an imitator!

Yeah, I barely made it home.  :P
I always make my own plug wires.
The lengths premade wires come in never fit the way I want them to.  8)

Have you tried to drive it since, like even up the driveway?

My sniper is finally in. I'm having a bit of difficult with one of my fuel pumps (left tank), but everything else seems to be running smooth. Getting the dual tank setup to run correctly was a bit of a challenge but I found a youtube video that had an interesting solution. I did a twist on it and was able to get everything up and going. It's so nice to have insta start on this 20 year old 350.

There were two things that bothered me:

1) The throttle was too sensitive. This is a common problem for most cars with a sniper. Fortunately, there is an easy fix that costs $10 from any car parts store. It's a throttle assembly extension. The Sniper II has this fix built in.

2) A loud air rush / wining noise at mid range and heavy throttle. It almost sounds like a belt squealing. The fix for the noise is to install a quad port spacer between the carb and the intake. I used a 1/2" spacer and the noise went away completely. There are some fancy ones on the market if you want to look for a bit of a mid-range performance boost.
