question about gears
« on: February 26, 2003, 09:40:00 PM »
Hey, everybody. I just found this board and thought maybe somebody could help me out. I have an '80 C10 w/ about 400 HP/TQ and a 4L60 w/ 2500 stall converter.  I am looking to upgrade my 3.08/open rearend to a posi with 3.73-4.10 gears.  I run a 28" tall tire.  Does anybody have any experience with such a combo?

Thanks

Since that tranny has an overdrive, you might as well go with 3.73 or 4.11.  Either would work alot better than 3.08 and really show that you have 400 hp.  With that much torque it will cause alot of breaking loose off the line though.

If you invest in a really good locker or posi unit, you should be able to hook up most of that off the line.  If will still be a pretty nasty tire shredder though.  You setup is similar to mine (mine has larger tires with higher stall), and I can hook up just about all of it with 4.11 gears.  Even though it's a little frustrating at the track, having a tire shredder around town can be highly entertaining though ;)  .

Thanks for the advice guys. Phaon1, I see that you have a B&M shifter.  Do you have any pictures of it installed in your truck? It's something else that I have been considering.

Thanks,
Jeremy

If you have anything close to 400hp and 400lbs/ft your not hooking up off the line with radials, period. But a posi type locker will help. Personally I like the detroit locker. Almost a full locker [strength wise] but un-locks for corners. Id go with 3.73's personally, cause with any more power and traction your 700r4 is going bye bye. After you go past the 400hp mark 700R4's dont last, even after they are fully built. Your only options are a th350/th400, either of those with a gear vendors overdrive, or a 4L80e.
