extra hp an tq 1984 chevy 4x4
« on: September 24, 2009, 02:26:48 AM »
hi everyone i need some advice i just put a 1989 chevy truck 4 bolt in my 84 k10 4x4 i added headers w/ dual exhaust 2 1/4 with cherry bombs.  edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock 600 cfm carb 4 bbl. and a brand new hei with plugs and wires. but this thing is still powerless by the way im running a gm goodwrench 700r4 and 35 inch tires no lift. i think it sits higher because its a canadian truck im not sure any ideas on how to get some more power and torque. and would smaller tires really make that much of a difference. thanks ahead of time for all of your imput

If you have stock gears in the truck, that would explain the lack of jam. I would match the gears to the tires, add a new cam/spring combo and be done with it, other than the cherry bombs....they are a restriction.

you do a gear change? 4.56 would be ideal DD with a 700R4 @70mph/145kph you running ~2100rpm in 4th..
if you wanted more grunt 4.88 would be next choice...

all those addd-ons are good.. a camshaft would wake the motor up in a big way.. the performer plus cam or little big bigger dual patern cam..

I'm in the same boat as you being disappointed by a Goodwrench crate.  I have a lighter 2WD with 28" tires and 3.73's, and I think my Goodwrench is a dog (while it's not perfect, I did invest some time dialing in my carb and timing, so that's not it).  Everyone is right here as far as getting your gear ratio versus tire size in order.  That needs to be addressed.  But as far as engine mods go, it is not only the cam holding you back there.  The compression, which is supposed to be 8.5:1, often specs out with less.  So if you only do a cam swap, keep it conservative like malibu795 suggested (something in the 200-215 @ 0.050" range).  And the heads are junk, forget using them for any serious performance engine.  My thinking is I basically have a brand new shortblock, because once I have the $$$, everything else is going in the garbage.

So is this a 350? And you can fit 35" tires with no lift?  ??? How much fender is cut off? And what is your final drive ratio?

Is this a stock motor, or a crate? If it is the stocker, you could shave the heads to gain a lil compression, or run thinner headgaskets. While the heads are off you could do a lil pocket porting, and maybe open up the intake runners.
