1980 K10 LQ4/4L80E build thread
« on: July 17, 2016, 11:58:25 AM »
Thought I would start a build thread on here.. Seems like a better forum with more sources for information and support from other members..

This truck used to be my dads. We never had it running and driving down the road. We originally bought the truck for $400- $500 I can't remember.  We split the cost, I took the motor out of it for my other truck at the time and he took the body for the rebuild.

The above pic is after my dad took off the cab/box, sandblasted and rustoleumed the frame, new shocks, brakes, gas tanks, fuel lines, exhaust, doubled up the springs, wiring, custom spare time mount from 90s that holds a 35.

Also new fenders, cab corners, rockers, body work on box.   Tires are pro comp mud terrain 35,12.5,15 off my other 83 k10..  This truck with no lift blocks sits higher than the 83 with 4" lift

Oh by the way... My dad and I pulled the engine and trans from a 2003 2500 HD in the junkyard.  $850 for both with all front accessory drive ;);)

Got the T case bolted up.  Had to shave off around the t case to get it to go into the trans...  also had to buy a new input shaft.. needed the long one.. i'm sure when I had it would've only overlapped splines about a half an inch. I used the grinder to take off a few thousands of the transmission output shaft to make sure it didn't bottom out as well.    got it all up and in there but I forgot to put the seal on the input of the case so I got to take it back down.. now I just got to see how the lengths for the driveshafts works cuz I think this is going to set a little further back in the truck..

Got the wiring harness and ECU back and all hooked up and it cranks over and everything. I still need to get a fuel pump before I can actually start it..  also I need to mount the fenders so I can mount my ECU and put the wiring in permanently.

I think I want to get a different steering column. Does anyone know what would be the best year and model to get a steering column that has cruise control but also Cable shift that will work with the 4l80e.  i'm hoping to not have to have an airbag..  i'm thinking like an 89 or 87 pick up but I don't know right off hand just curious if anyone knows

There is no column that uses a cable other than 1999-up for trucks.  Why not just use a rod like the factory did.  I am using a Lokar on mine and it has been fine for 30K miles.
