how to tell a cam?

i know a guy through where i work that has two cam shafts for sale. one brand new with no documents, marking, etc for identifing it, and the other is barley used. i told him i'd make an offer next week for both. How do you measure the cam to figure what it is

Depending on what it is, the back of the camshaft at the distributor gear end will have a number and a marking on it indicating the PN or the grind.

If it is slightly used, does he have the lifters it was broken in with?

This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't give over $50 for a used set of cam and lifters, especially one you don't know the specs or history about. Chris Lucas

i was thinking the same thing, $50-$75 for both cam shafts. he never said if it had the lifters or not

I wouldn't run new lifters on a used cam.  They have a tendency to wipe lobes off or chew the lifter down. Chris Lucas

thanks, i wouldnt think to run new lifters with a used cam just cause things would be worn unevenly and a spell for engine disaster
