Why not? Make sure it's clean and put the drive all the way in. Put a little muscle into it

put a 1/2" drive ratchet directly in the square slot.  No sockets or anything. Put a pipe over the handle for extra leverage or use a hammer and wack it a few times ensure you're are going counter clockwise with it.  It'll come out.
If not, time for a propane torch to warm it up, then repeat.  Don't go too crazy w/ the propane torch, differential oil is oil after all.

How about some PB Blaster on it and let it soak in for a little bit.

I had one that was rounded off and couldn't get anything into it solid enough to turn it out. I ended up welding a bolt into it and it came right out. I replaced it with a square plug so I could use an eight point socket on it next time.

Give it a good swat or two with a hammer. Spray it with weasel pee, and let it soak for an hour or so wont hurt. Use a ratchet or breaker bar directly on it. Heat around it with a torch if you have to. Heating it plenty hot wont hurt it.

It is 3/8" drive. You are better of with leverage over anything else. You can easily strip it out if you are not in there all the way. http://www.stanleyproto.com/default.asp?TYPE=CATEGORY&CATEGORY=J9500B&strSiteName=PROTO&strDefaultCatalog=PROTO these work great for removing stripped plugs
