While you are in there......... diff question

The front of my diff is leaking (87 short step with 123 k)
I want to balance the driveline when I replace the seal.

Are there any gotchas to look out for?  Im sure that
Murphy is laughing at me but I wanna try it myself.

Im sure it is the seal, but I have to take the yoke off to get at it....eh?
and something caused it to leak....like maybe getting repeatedly whacked by
the driveline....just want to be cautious.

or is that stupid?

     I don't understand, is your driveshaft at such an extreme angle that it is binding the yolk as it turns ?  If that is the case then you need to correct the angle before proceeding.  Other than that when you have the diff open, you should check the gears for abnormal wear.  The ring and pinion gears should be uniform on the wear pattern on the gears, about 1/4" from the gears cogs themselves.  Also check to make sure there is no metal flakes or excessive metal particles in the gear oil.

Never done a 10 bolt yet but you shouldn't need to take the cover off just make a line on the pinion nut and the pinion shaft so you know how much to tq the nut back on remove the nut yoke and cover and you seal should be right there. If you do want to remove the dif cover go ahead and inspect the ring see if any teeth are chipped or chewed up. But if it ain't broke don't fix it

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you trying to replace the pinion seal? If so make sure you witness mark the pinion, the nut, and the companion flange.

ok.... thats gettin somewhere.

yep the forward seal is toast.   I understand about puttin a mark
where the pinon bolt was etc etc    but is there a torque
value for that muther?   My Daddy left me a 850lb torque
wrench and Im dying to use it for real.....

No no tq cause its Ben tq before and if you do tq it,it will be too tight. If you were to start off fresh then yes but due to bearing wear you will over tighten it

Like Vile said, make a witness mark on everything.
Count the turns on the nut as you remove it.
Replace the seal and replace the nut using the same amount of turns until it took to remove it. Make sure the witness marks line up.
