diagnosing a sound coming from the rear

I've got what sounds like a clicking sound coming somewhere from the rear end when moving slowly forward.  It progresses with speed to a rhythmic rubbing type sound.  Before I go digging into the wrong system for no reason, I was wondering if this is a tell tale sound of something specific, like the rear U-joint, rear (drum) brakes or wheel bearings, or differential.  Thanks for any input.

My first thought is a u-joint without actually hearing it. It's happened to me and took a while till I found it. But it still could be brakes. Good luck!
