79 TH400 how many quarts after filter change ?
« on: February 10, 2016, 12:28:32 AM »
changed the tranny filter in my 79 K25 4wd its a Th400 how much fluid do I put back in ? the owners man. said 3.5 qts which I have put back in 3qts so far [ I ran out thought I had more] I started it back up today a fig. I'd move it a little just to get that run through it . with the 3qts in it , it barely moves and it doesn't want to move at all in revers . will a half qt do this ? fluid I drained out was really bad filter didn't look to bad and didn't see much shavings in the pan . it has 66,000 on the truck and its all original . Thanks for the help

Maybe I'm missing something? Start it up, let it idle in park or neutral, what ever is stamped on the stick. Fill it up to the full line. Hopefully it will move.

that's what the dum owners manual said lol 3.5 qts  I would say closer to 4 I put in 3 for now that's what I had . but ya I started let it run then put it through the gears a couple of times it will move forward but not reverse yet . I wouldn't just dump it in till its full on the stick you don't want to over fill it .

3.5 sounds right for a passenger car.

Either way I'd put it in a pint at a time so that it is on the high side of the cold mark then drive it around so that it comes up to normal operating temperature then check it in the hot range.
