Too much unburned gas in the exhaust system is a usual culprit. The fuel ignites in the hot exhaust.
Another cause can be oxygen entering the exhaust system by means of a leak in the pipes someplace.

Have you plugged off the air injection lines going to your exhaust manifolds?? I had the same problem on my 4.3 S10 when I opened up the exhaust, between every shift and during downshifting it would be a non-stop backfire. pulled the air injection off of the exhaust manifold and plugged the holes and the backfire disapeared.
