I'm lost
« on: January 29, 2008, 05:11:23 PM »
Hey guys, I just bought a 86 chevy swb, super clean, and I was trying to get some headers for it but I can only seem to have found one company that makes them, hedman makes the one I need but it is gonna cost me 500.00.Why,because I have this A.I.R. system!!What is this system? Do I need it?What is the purpose for it? Has anyone else had this problem; if so what type of headers did you use? Also I got one more question; what is this air cleaner inside my other air cleaner?  Hope to get some answers soon. This is an awesome site!!!

It is Air Injection.  Do you have emmissions testing where you are, if so it won't pass without it.  I know Edelbrock makes air headers, not sure on the price though.  I think you need to describe the air cleaner inside the aircleaner thing...

You mean the Crankcase Ventillation Filter in the passenger side rear corner of the Aircleaner???

If you change to an Open Element Aircleaner, just use a Crankcase Breather in the Valve Cover

Yes, that is for the air injection into the exhaust ports of your engine via the exhaust manifolds, purpose  I think is to dilute the exhaust. The so called air cleaner in side the air cleaner? you talking about the smaller round filter with a metal mesh that goes inside the normal paper filter? My truck had this too, not too sure what it's for.....

Hah, something I know. The exaust gasses are still real hot at the manifold and there is still some unburnt fuel and when you inject a little air, viola, more complete combustion, and reduced emmisions.

Yeah, wont pass test without it.

Yes, we do have emission testing in texas ,I am in San Antonio Tx. I will try lookin up edelbrock to see what they have. Does anyone have any model #'s on headers  that they have tried out?Yeah it is that weird looking round mesh filter inside the air cleaner housing, I was just wondering if I need to do any maintenance to it? These truck r cool as heck, I love this truck, so many cool & weird stuff in them!!!I will try to post up pics as soon as I figure out how to!!!!!

Actually, it will pass without the smog pump etc.....it won't pass the visual, but the emissions will do just fine. I had a friend of mine try this years ago.....

A.I.R. is injected after combustion takes place. So like CCZ said it acts like a continuation of the combustion process. There are 2 methods 1) upstream (in the manifold) and 2) downstream at the catalytic converter. Since combustion has already taken place the added 02 right inside the manifold will help reduce HC's an CO's. Downstream it helps feed oxygen into the catalytic converter which allows it to oxidize and reduce depending on the emissions system used and the type of catalyst used. It also helps the cat maintain sustainable temps. For EFI and Computer controlled vehicles the oxygen sensor sort of allows this to happen naturally due to the constant rich/lean switching that occurs in closed loop which essentially feeds O2 into the cat. If it's a dual bed cat the O2 is injected into the second bed (I'm rambling and getting off topic) and allows for better NOx reduction. So if all you are getting for an emissions test is a tailpipe test take the AIR system out and just put in a good Catalytic converter. If you have an EGR leave it in tact.

It's up to you. If you ditch the A.I.R. Ditch the air cleaner. If you keep the A.I.R. keep it.

I would keep them around just in case you might need them....I ditched all my emission equipment and sold them on E Bay.
