Making a Suburban body into a crew cab (not the typical way)
« on: September 20, 2010, 06:32:33 PM »
I know that there has been a lot of people that have converted suburbans by dropping a crew cab onto the frame and then having a short flat bed. This is not what I want to do.
I want a regular crew cab, but seem to be having trouble finding one in my area, but there are a ton of Suburbans.
I have a crew cab frame available to me at a decent price, but no cab.
What I want to do is cut the back off of a suburban body and weld on the back of a regular cab. Then put it on the crew cab frame.
Is this possible?
One advantage is that I would gain a cab that has all of the nice power options that I would be wanting.
I want to build a crew cab with a suburban type interior, not the utility company type interior.
Possible, crazy, what?

Don't know if this would interest you, but I have seen some people that turned their burbans in to an avalanche.   Basically you just cut the top off behind the back doors but leave the lower quarters and weld in the back of a pickup cab to fill the gap.  Then you get a crew cab with a shorter-than-shortbed bed.  I don't have any pics though.

There were actually trucks like the top one from the factory, sold in Latin America.

While I do love the look of the Sub being cut down, I really need the full bed. I need to use it to haul my 5th wheel.
Right now I have a 2003 Dodge with the Cummins and it is great, but I can not afford it and need to sell it. So, I need to replace it with a 73-87 Chevy Crew cab. I have a 77 C10 and love the trucks.
Ideally I want one that looks like a 73-74 3/4 ton 4x4 with the two-tone paint and trim, but has some of the interior of the 80-91 Suburbans.
