My 1976 Chevrolet K-20
« on: August 05, 2007, 08:04:50 PM »
I just got back into the game for real.  I traded a 1976 K-20 that had no engine or trans and a lot of rust to a friend of mine in January for a 1989 F-150 that I drive most of the time.  But that is not a topic that belongs on a GM thread.  Anyway, while he had it, we got a 1983 Chevrolet 4x2 truck with absolutely no rust on it at all.  We put the doors and bed and front clip on the 1976 K-20 chassis.  Well, I am too tall to fit into my 1989 Trans Am.  I traded it this morning and got back my 1976 K-20.  It now has a SM465 trans, a new clutch kit, and an NP205 transfer case with brand new custom built drivelines.  The truck has a 14 bolt 3.73 ratio 10.5" rearend and a 10 bolt 3.73 front end with a carrier from a rearend out of a 1989 GMC 1500 4x4.  It has a 305 in it, but it blew up before I got the truck.  I am rebuilding a 305 I have with ported 601 heads, my crane energizer cam that made my 327 idle at 1200 RPM's (lumpy) stock pistons, and upgraded 1.94/1.50 valves.  I will add pics and update as I go.

Will be adding pics this evening, some are kind of dark, but it was the best I could do.  I just finished putting the 305 together today.  I will be painting it on Friday, then going to try to get it installed.

Tried to post pics the other day but the thing would not move to the next page.  I will try again later.  Anyway, the rebuilt 305 is in and runs.  It will get 70psi oil pressure cold and about 35-40 hot, as soon as you tap the gas, right back to 60 or more, if I rev above 2200 it plays like its gonna hit 80psi.  Had to replace water pump... water was coming out of the pump shaft seal.  Gonna have to do it again too, since the new one does not have threads for the power steering pump.  Those are simple fixes though, I was just glad to have an old chevy again.  Up next is a Dana 44 swap, a friend has one with the 3 leaf front springs that he thought was for his 1972 ford... I let him know that the pumpkin was on the wrong side.  He then said to get it out of his yard.  I hope it is a 3.73, but if not, I will re-gear it.  My front end is a 10 bolt with a carrier from a 1989 K-10 rear end (too bad it was not a posi... would have been fun), the guy I originally got the truck from rebuilt the front end and forgot the big 1/4" side shims... left two great spider gear pop-out dents in the front cover... sawed the carrier in half too.  All fixed now.

My 1987 Chevrolet R-10
« Reply #6 on: February 07, 2008, 09:15:26 PM »
I traded my 1976 K-20 Scottsdale to a friend on Wednesday for his truck.  He had a 1987 Chevrolet R-10 LWB 305 TBI 700-R4.  His truck was all original with next to no rust and 51,620 original miles(As of about 11:00AM Wednesday.  It was hit while he was at work and it damages the bed and the driver cab corner only.  The trans was just rebuilt at a cost of $1200.  He was disheartened by the continuing problems with the truck, so he traded it to me.  I just could not let him crush it cause thats what he was going to do with it.  I will try to get some pics posted tomorrow.  Dang, guess I need a new handle on the site... Nah ;D
