Removing a Wooden Bed
« on: May 29, 2011, 09:33:36 PM »
I'm getting ready to repair some rust damage in the walls of my bed so I thought I'd take the oppurtunity to rip out the rotted wood and get it ready for a new bed kit. Also took the oppurtunity to sand down the back end of the frame and primer the entire underside. The wood was much harder than I thought to get out thanks to about 50 square nuts, 8 of which were above my fuel tank. Since I wasn't worried about preserving the old rails or the wood I kind of went barbaric on it with a jigsaw and a hacksaw. I'm happy with the end product now. The only pieces I can't get off are the side rails as you can tell. I sprayed them tonight with some overnight lubricant, going to try again in the morning. While its all off I'm considering putting in a new Flowmaster muffler and exhaust system, we'll see if the wife approves haha. At this point I'm planning on doing the wood by myself and just ordering the new rails and hardware. It will be after I finally get some welding done and get rid of the rust damage. Here's some pics, if anyone has any suggestions as to how to get those darn side rails off without too much body damage I'd appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks. The pics are before, during, and after.

Are you talking about removing the angle strips?

They are welded on from the factory. You will have to drill the welds out to get them off and there are a lot of them. Check out this link.

Thanks! That will save a lot of time. I noticed it was attached, but I couldn't tell if it was a weld because most of my rust damage is where that angle strip meets the body. When I weld the new angle strips on it will be to the new sheet metal that I will be welding in to repair the rust damage.
