Title: (mostly)Stock c10 quarter time
Post by: Qman on August 13, 2016, 12:10:13 AM
I have a 1986 C10 fleetside long bed. Im guessing it weighs about 4k lbs. It has a stock LT9 (smogger)350 in it but aftermarket air cleaner and full duel exhaust with long tubes and two huge free flow dynomax mufflers. Made anywhere from 165-185 from the factory which is pretty wimpy, i know. Its backed by a 4 speed manual with a 3.08 rear end. Anyway,  to the point! Im planning on going to the drag strip next weekend just for fun with a bunch of friends in their equally slow cars.  Im wondering if anybody knows what quarter mile times and trap speeds i can be expecting. Traction is by far not an issue with my rear end and wheel setup. My shifts arent perfect but they are quick. (probably only gonna shift twice anyway during)
Thanks,  -Q

hate to say it but with the sm465 you might see 18. you could get a speedometer app on your phone and just run it and see what it shows. the sm465 is a strong trans but not a good fast shifter and will kill your time imo

Let us know how you do. How are your driving skills? Can you speed shift the granny tranny?  :D

i did a 16.8 with a crate 350 and 2.56 rear gear, so you should be able to do at least that.

The 305 produced a 17.9

i only did it to see what the engines could do.

i will be testing the 4.3 asap.

There is talk of re-opening a dragstrip in NW Indiana.  US30 dragway...  If I ever get the chance to move back to the area, (still own my house up there)  I am going to build something for that track.  It is supposed to be an 1/8th mile but I want a stick to make it fun...

Yeah the trannys gearing...it's less than ideal. But i can shift it pretty quick. I can get a chip in second. Synchros are kinda shot in third too. I get a nice little metal crunch if I go quick but not too bad. I tried one of those GPS acceleration apps and it said I did a 17.0 but I'm not sold on the accuracy...apparently I did a 10 second 0-60 in the same run. Figured it was quicker than that since I only shift once to get there  ???
Anyway. The strip's et does not lie. I'll post up the time slip Saturday night :)

Oh and it's not a sm465 but rather the new process 4 speed. I have no granny gear. Just a straight up 4 speed.

So that's why you can shift fast(ish), I've driven a 465, it really is a 3spd with a low, and it will not shift fast, one was fronted by a 292 straight 6, the other fronted by a 350. I can shift my deuce and a half faster(even with a shot second gear syncro) and a full 5 speed

So what's up with these 465's? The granny gear I can understand but besides that? Just bad gear synchronizing? Really long throws? What makes em notorious. Sorry about OT, just curious. Hijacking my own thread, lol.

Long throw, and big gear gap, the 350 was better, but the 292 was rev high, wait for rpms to drop before letting clutch go for the 1st to 2nd shift. If you didn't wAit, it would buck like a bronco as the engine speed came right down, but still enough rpm trying to speed up everything. The clutch wasn't real grabby either, but it did not like the 1st to 2nd shift unless you let the rpms come way down

Best pass of the day: 16.1 @ 83 mph. It was enough to edge out an 80s z28 and an Oldsmobile. Everything else destroyed me lol.

Well that's not bad for a smogger v-8 in a heavy truck.

i'm thinking the z-28 was tired as they should be able to do mid 15's.

Most likely. I got a better launch and then we kinda stayed even the whole way. Nobody pulled

You might have a lower e.t. or top speed if you run with a tailgate up----maybe.

Are you running the stock Hurst shifter?

Do iiiiiit. Nothing like seeing the lights coming down to get your blood pumping. Btw good times there

Had the tailgate off. My brother did mention after that trucks have some weird aero characteristics and it might be better with it on and up. Guess i gotta go back again and see. Hah ;) anyway if nothing else,  i shed a few pounds with it. I couldnt launch hard at anything over about 2500 due to no weight back there though.

It is a hurst shifter. Was it stock? I have no clue. Anyway the throws are still very long. Took all my speed to shift decently fast. On the drive home i seat swapped with my brother in his mustang with a short shifter and i was amazed. All i had to do was twist my wrist and i could get to any gear. :O

I did run my my truck thrusday night
I went up a against a stock 2016 powerstroke dually and a stock 2014 Z71 with 22's. I lost against both but. It was close tho, losing by a truck and a half to both . I could read the plates well lol
I'd Say my truck almost 40 yrs old did pretty good. We did some roll races and that's were it was even closer. Those tall tires kill my take off.

Plain jane 350
With edelbrock 600 carburetor & intake
LT headers /Flowmaster
Truck runs great, once I get me a jammed up tranny with an overdrive and a 1 piece drive shaft with a solid rear end
I'll try and bump it up too at least 400hp
