tires!
« on: August 06, 2001, 08:17:00 PM »
hey i just bought some very nice 16X8 rims, but i was wondering if 8 inches is too thin. i really hope not. i want some nice wide street tires, i think its called low profile. i was thinking 295/50 ? would that work on 16 X 8 rims? i dont know much about this subject. thanks. :)

Roger,
This is just my personal opinion, but I wouldn't go that wide on the front.  295s would be excellent for rear traction, however.  I have 255/70s all the way around on mine with 15x8" rims.  I really like them a lot.  I know quite a few guys who are running 275/60s.  I'm pretty sure you can get those to fit a 16" rim as well.  Stick with something narrower up front so you don't rub while cornering.

i think the magic number was 4.5" for a 10 inch rim, so i dunno 3.5 inches? i haven't heard of anyone having problems with the big rubber all the way around. look at the pictures page. i dunno

i have 295/50's all the way around and i roll and take turns just fine. it also gives the truck a wide low profile stance..

The 8 inch wheels will do well under the truck but the 295-50 is way too much tire for that rim width. The tire has way too much section width to put on that rim. It'll bow up in the middle and never squat right for a good contact patch. The minimum good rim for a 295 would be a 10 inch wheel. Otherwise you need to stick to a smaller tire. A 265 series will work well. I'm not sure what all's available for a 16 inch wheel though. Wider is NOT always better(don't tell Pontiac!!!) Good luck dude, Bill

Mine

I have 15x8 eagle five stars on my truck i had one problem puttin them on the back and it was the drums. I pulled these wheels off a newer model it was i think a 83 and it had the drums flat but i changed studs and put a space between the wheel and the drum theres like 1/4 between the back of the wheel and my drum. My truck is a heavy half so theres like a outside edge that pokes out. All four are like flush with the fenders and im runnin 255/70's and i havent lowered mine and it looks sharp. There will be a picture of it in the members trucks pages but mat still hasnt got to mine. Low profiles give you a hard ride and to big of tires make the truck slow and cost more.

what you really need to do is decide what overall height you want.then you can contact nitto,or tire rack or even your local tire shop and they will be able to tell you what size you need to get the right height.as for the wdth i think its perfect, too wide and wet traction sucks.

FYI, truck rallies are 8.5 inches wide...on all 4 corners with 4" back spacing.  15 X 8's will be fine unless your truck is lowered in front 4" like mine, then the rim rubs the lower control arm and the tire rubs the inner fender well.

so what is the right back spacing to use with a 10 wide wheel...looking forward to purchasing some 15x10's very soon...just something i think i should think about...

i would prefer that the wheel site flush with the outside of the fender and i am planning on useing 295-50-15's ont he wheels...

thanks
