gm 260 vs 290
« on: December 10, 2011, 10:42:35 PM »
I'm considering buying another gm crate engine because my old goodwrench 350 is tired.  GM sells a 260hp and a 290hp version.  The price difference is about $500.  The only other difference I can tell is the cam.  Does anyone know if this is the only difference?  That seems like a really expensive cam.  Any opinions?  I have a good core, but I don't know of any trustworthy engine builders in the Phoenix area that will rebuild a comparable 350 for the same price.  Anyone know of a reasonable, reputable machine shop in Phoenix?

That sounds right, $500.00 for 30 more horsepower.  That is how company's think.  You are probably right, the only difference is the cam, sounds crazy buy people see 290 instead of 260 and they want the one with more horsepower.
I don't live in Phoenix, but I have always just visited shops, asked for references, and then did a little digging around myself to see if they have some or a lot of bad reviews.  1 or 2 bad reviews in say 10 or 15 years in business is going to happen, but several is always a bad sign.

I got my 383 stroker from Tuff Dawg engines (aka: D & J Machine Shop) 5 or 6 years ago.  They build awesome engines and are in Phoenix. I researched engine builders for weeks prior to deciding on their shop. And they shipped it to Va for free.  Their company name and address is below.  I emailed a guy named Darl their many times during my process to customize my engine the way i wanted it.
