454 Oil Cooler?
« on: March 20, 2006, 11:31:00 PM »
I am getting ready to install a 454 into my 84 c10 originally with straight 6.
The 454 came out of an 86 Suburban and is equipped with oil cooler lines right above the filter.
If I am not doing in major hauling...is it really needed?
Will the lines/unit twist off and I be able to just use the filter?
or do I just need to find a cooler and run lines?

I would run the cooler even if you are not doing heavy hauling. The engine will last longer. You should be able to pick up an aftermarket cooler pretty cheap.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I agree.  My 91 sub has a stock oil cooler.  I bought it from Arizona.  I mainly bought it for the body--rust free etc.... However, on my drive back to Va, across the country, I was shocked at how the 5.7 litre motor didn't use a drop of oil. She is strong too. It has 180,000 miles and runs great and doesn't use oil at allllll.

So, keep the oil cooler on it to keep her cool.  It will last a looooong time.
I put a tranny cooler on my sub as well when i got it.  the highest rating cooler available--so long as your radiator is big enough.
