'82 Cruise Control
« on: February 13, 2008, 09:21:09 AM »
My '82 3/4 Ton pickup is factory equipped with cruise control (non-electronic).  This model does not allow the "tap" feature to increase or decrease speed on the fly.  I would like to upgrade to this feature.

Does anyone have any information on the availablility of a non-electronic cruise module with the "tap" feature for this truck; and if so where to get said unit besides the bone-yard?

If not, has anyone ever done a conversion to the later electronic versions (factory) in an early truck like this? Any articles or clues?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Mike

The later models (83-up if I remember correctly) used the VSS on the back of the speedo to handle the cruise control.
Not sure what you mean by a tap feature, but the factory cruise on these weren't that great.

Factory Non-Electric Cruise Systems are junk, as most cases the diaphram usually dries out/Tears/usually develops a large hole with time... Seems like a lot of Companies out there try to rape you, when it comes time to replace the Old Diaphram as well :o

As Capt said, later models used a VSS connected to the rear of the Speedo, and the Majority of the Quality Aftermarkets do as well!

My 85's was vacuum controlled from the factory.  Always acted quirky, combine that with an anemic 305 and 1550 rpm @ 70 mph, it was worthless.  But it did have the "tap" feature you are referring to, only to increase speed though (in 2 mph increments).  Most newer cars allowed to decrease speed the same way, but these trucks never did.  I disconnected it since I never use cruise control, not even on cross-country trips.
