I recommend sitting down with the booklet that came with your carb (assuming you bought it new). It should tell you all the various adjustments you can make and how to get them dialed in. The carb is highly adjustable and if you take the time to get everything right, it should run pretty well. I also had a problem with the fast-idle screw hanging up on the throttle linkage making the truck run insanely rich. The stink was constant and unrelenting. I just backed off the screw slightly and it works great now. I spent a lot of time playing with jets. I would swap them, drive, smell the exhaust, drive some more, swap again and repeat. I'm pretty happy with the primaries, though I should probably go a little richer with the secondaries. As long as your choke starts the truck and opens fully when warm, I wouldn't worry about it. I just hooked the choke to the old choke wire. That may not be right, but it seems to work well enough.
