i was thinking of running a noisy gear drive on my engine .has anyone used one of these on a 350 or 383 with roller cam .what are the pro's and con's for running one .also right now i have a new stock oem timing set (elgin ).if the machine shop press this gear on my crank when i take it to get it all balance and clearance ,could i just simply replace the set with the gear drive with out going back to the machinist .other words what im asking is can the gear be pulled off and replace with gear from drive set .

lol they whine like a supercharger would. my buddy had some on his and for some reason they would back off the cam and grind into the timing cover

They are so loud that it gets on my nerves. They also make a quiet one that sounds like a turbo spooling.

I have ran one in the past. For the first day or so it sounded pretty good but after that it just became an annoying nuisance. But they weren't quality gears like Pete Jackson offers. They were from Proform and they also ground into the timing cover as well as the block. I like my music loud and I like my exhaust fairly loud, but I could not tolerate the gears for very long. Now they're decorating my garage wall

yep right that's the whinning sound i want .i was told that u have to grind the inside of some timing covers for clearance only ,no block work .the one i'm looking at is from CAT PERFORMANCE pt #GD-350RN MADE FROM 8620 LOW CARBON STEEL.i know i can also get that whine fron a cog belt setup ,but they are not good for daily use ,belts wear fast

all the popular manufacturers will have the install instructions on their website so you can read about the install process. I think there is one or two that dont need the block to be grinded.

yeah thats correct ,from what i have reseached out ,the block will need to be grind down if it had a raised knot(hump)that interfearing with the dog bone(gears)sitting flush against to block,but not actualy contacting the bloclk(correct clearance between block and dog bone ).the CAT gears come it very detailed instr .i found out the stock timing covers need no grinding ,thick alum needs a little .if u grind a stock cover the bog bone will tend to walk on you and not work correctly .VIA MY LITTLE RESEARCH .

Save your money and spend it on something that will actually improve performance! I originally ran one on my '69 Chevelle. The whine got annoying after a while. Even the quiet ones aren't that quiet. Mine was an Erson with an idler cast in the front aluminum cover. The gears transmit a lot of harmonics into the valvetrain. A quality double roller chain is much less expensive and works just as good.

wel i have been advised the machine sop not to run one from CAT .if its not a major name brand he dont recomend it ,also told me to get aftermarket rods because he said it don't make sense to him to put new arp bolts in stock rods and then pay someone else to grind most of them off to during clearancing .
so i ordered a set of pro comp pc4101 5.7 .just gonna use a summit street strip (true )dbl roller set for timing ,its an upgrade from mystock one

If you are running a roller cam, you should check with the manufacturer about running a gear drive.
Personally I wouldn't run one.

don't know if your running fuel injection, but those gear drives can screw up knock sensors.
