I don't have reverse lights on my 86 GMC with a 3spd auto.
They come on if I hold the gear selector in between Park and Reverse.
WTH?

Their is an adjustment for this under the dash on steering collum, or your linkage needs an slight adjustment under the floor board.

Any chance at being a bit more specific than this?

It's on top of the steering column just before the firewall. White with a green and blue wire connected to it. About 3 inches wide and it clicks when you adjust it with your hand. Just takes light pressure moves very easily. Go HABS.

seems like an adjustment to the safety neutral switch, as mentioned it is on your steering column attached by two screws.
can you start your engine in drive, R, or L2? You should only be able to start engine in N and P. Hence the name. I think it controls the Reverse lights.

^^What they said. Follow the steering column down to the firewall and between the 10 and 2 o'clock position on top of the column is the park safety switch. There is a cam that slides back and forth within an outer housing that has contacts to energize the reverse lights. Turn that cam.
