4x4 5.3l,6.0l, ls swap??
« on: October 28, 2013, 07:47:03 PM »
I've seen all of these pavement pusher 2wd swapping LS styled engines into their trucks but none for us 4x4 guys. Am I missing these threads and if so some one please post the link. Tax season is on it's way and so Will be my L33 unless I come across an LS1-3 for cheap.

I just joined the forum a few days ago but I just did an LS1 swap on my 86 GMC High Sierra 4x4 SB. I can tell you just about everything you need to know. The swap was fairly easy but can be pricey. It depends on how much you spend on an engine/transmission and if it comes with a wiring harness.  Also, Street and Performance will have everything you need and will walk you through your issues for free!

Sounds good. I plan on rebuilding the 700-r4 with many upgrades so engine swap is all I will likely be doing. But out of curiosity, did you change transmissions as well and my major questions are motor mounts, factory or something that moves the engine to the rear; exhaust is the only other issue I haven't thought through, factory manifolds of headers? How did you manage to fit exhaust manifolds in the '86?

I did change to a 4l60e transmission. I believe the 700r4 will still work, but that is one thing I'm not sure about. The motor mounts from Street and Performance set the motor where it needs to be whether you use the 700r4 or 4L60e. Also, you can use stock exhaust manifold or headers. I went with headers from Street and Performance, but they did the same swap with stock manifold and just had to take a little off of the passenger side manifold. All that means is a few seconds with a grinder. Here is the web address to S&P:  www.hotrodlane.cc/

Pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics....Mostly of under the engine. I am curious about your transfer case. Driver side drop or passenger? Did you have any driveshaft issues front/rear?

Frotosride,

I apologize! I have been away from home due to work. As soon as I get back I will send some pics. It may be a week before I get back, but I promise I will post them!

I kept the factory transfer case but I had to get an adapter from Jags that Run to make the VSS work..
I will send a pic of that as well. I had to lengthen the rear drive shaft only because I put a 4 inch lift on the truck. The stock drive shaft should be fine

the 700R-4 will work.  little off topic, I'm doing a 5.3L swap into my Nissan with a 4L60E and 241C.  the 700R-4 will work.

if i ever put a 6.0 under the hood of my truck, it would be followed by the 4l80e 6 speed. i dont understand why you would put a modern engine with an outdated transmission.

Hey Wojo, where are these pics?

I got a 4" lift and my driveshafts worked fine. Notched frame for manifolds to clear
