383 or 350?
« on: January 28, 2012, 01:15:26 PM »
I just sold my 85 Scottsdale 305 beater and I'm looking for a reliable truck that I can drive daily and depend on to get me to work 15 miles away. I have a few choices and I want to know what your guy's opinion is on the 383 stroker. Or should I go for the 350?

350 is easier to build.

350 should get better mpgs, but properly built, either one is reliable. Do you have 2 trucks you're looking at?

Yes one is an 86 silverado 4x4 with a 383. The other is the same only it has the 350.

Hmm, obviously the 383 did not come in any vehicle chevrolet made from the factory, but I am not sure if the 350 was an option for that year model either. I'd find out who built the engine(s). If it's a shade tree mechanic putting the 383 together, that could be a concern. The 350 may be original and that's also a concern.

I love my 383 stroker in my 79, but, I'm glad I don't have to drive it everyday.  It's just to play with and haul things every once in a while.  Even my 91 V2500 suburban gets better mpg, pretty much only used for my camping excursions.  Glad I don't drive either one to work every day, thanks to a new unmarked Hybrid Ford Fusion sheriff's car.

Anyway, a 383 has more torque than a 30 foot long torque wrench and is quite fun. But she stays thirsty w/ an RV cam and 4v Qjet carb.
