I've got a big orange choke warning on my dash. I've tried carb cleaner through the gas tank and the spray straight into the carb, but it's still giving me a warning from time to time. I talked to a mechanic and he thinks the edlebrock carb is for a 6cyl but I really have no clue.

Well first off your mechanic knows squat because that is a Holley not a Edelbrock carb lol. Also is the electric choke even hooked up?

Sorry that's my mistake not his. I knew it was one or the other. Also what is the electric choke? Is it in the photo?
Edit: Is it that thing above my hand? Also how do I know if it's hooked up? I can take a look tomorrow when it's bright out.

That round thing on the passenger side. Should have a wire coming off of it.

nothing to do with your problem but whats the second spring looking thing on the accelerator cables side?

Not sure it runs from the firewall to the side of the engine near the plugs.
I just got back from a drive and am experiencing another issue. The engine is running incredibly rich and is idling at a high rpm. I'm thinking vacuum leak or possibly a gasket?

The choke heater and thus the warning light for these trucks originally ran through the oil pressure switch (right above the oil filter on the engine) The choke warning light is designed to come on if that switch is showing low pressure (initial startup the light will be on because there is no pressure till the oil pump starts turning. If the light is randomly coming on while you are driving, I would look to the oil pressure switch not your choke. The switches can die, and alot of people will just route a new wire for the choke (+12v in on)

Im not very good with cars. What is it exactly that I should be doing?
Okay, excuse my stupidity but Im beginning to understand what you're saying. I have to go for now, but I will take a peek underneath my truck when I get home.

Think I figured out what the springy thingy is. Aftermarket coolant temp sensor.

Well I figured out it was my gasket after I sprayed the carb with some cleaner while it was idling but it probably won't solve the choke issue . Thanks for the replies tho.

How long should it take for an electric choke to fully open?
(we are almost there)

Depends how tight it's set, about 5 minutes if it's not off its not working correctly.

I got a choke warning one time in the last 11 years but she forgot and I didn't return it.
